Bronxville Girls’ Tennis Players Compete at Sectionals, Football Overpowers Hendrik Hudson 47-0, and Girls’ and Boys’ Cross Country Teams Win League Championships

Oct. 16, 2024: With the second half of October in sight, the Bronxville teams are finishing up their regular season and moving on to sectional playoffs.
The girls’ tennis team was the first team to compete at the sectional level this past weekend, and the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams and the field hockey team will follow with playoff games later next week. The football team has two more games before the playoff season gets started, and the cross country teams will compete at the Section 1 Championships on November 9th.

The Girls’ Tennis Individual Sectional Championship got underway on Sunday at Harrison High School. Seven members of the Bronxville tennis team made the cut including singles player Anette Dani and doubles teams Rose Woolery and Astrid Pulkkinen, Coco Vail and Annie Marshall, and Zoe Sandliva and Ariana Cutler.
Dani, who received a bye in the first round, defeated John Jay Cross River’s Lauren Metro (6-1, 6-1) in the second round and Mamaroneck’s Sadie Bilik (6-1, 5-7, 10-5) in the third and lost to Keio’s Sakura Hino (6-2,6-0) in the quarterfinals. Woolery and Pulkkinen advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over the John Jay Cross River’s Lucy Millhon and Kiersten McCarthy but lost in the third round to a strong team from Suffern.
Football
The Bronxville football team improved its record to 5-0 with a 47-0 win over Hendrik Hudson on Saturday. The Broncos moved up to Class B this fall and have proven they are highly competitive.
With wins over Pleasantville, Pelham, Byram Hills, Ardsley, and Hen Hud, the Broncos have outscored their competition 173-29 and sit at the top of Class B along with undefeated Westlake. Last fall, the Broncos defeated the Wildcats 13-7 in the Class C Sectional Championship.
The football team will finish up the season with a game against Croton Harmon (0-5) this coming Saturday and a home game against Edgemont/Blind Brook (0-6) on October 26th.
Cross Country
The girls’ cross country team won their League 3B Championship against Hastings and Dobbs Ferry with Carina Winiecki placing 2nd for the Broncos in a time of 20:14.3. Mia Horgan placed 3rd (20:30.7) and was followed by Emerson Dennis (4th, 22:14.7), Ella McCalla (6th, 23:13.3), and Fiona Keveney (7th, 23:20.5).
The girls’ team also competed at the Manhattan Invitational on Sunday at Van Cortlandt Park. In the Varsity Girls F race, Winiecki placed 1st in 15:39.9, Horgan placed 3rd in 15:49.2, and Maddy Williams placed 9th in 16:34.2.
The boys’ cross country team also won their League 3B Championship against Irvington, Albertus Magnus, Hastings, and Dobbs Ferry. Kieran McBride finished 1st in 17:02.3 and was followed by Matthew Jensen (3rd, 17:13.8), Julian Gonzalez (7th 17:42.5), Nate Deutsch (8th, 17:46.4), and Jack Toal (9th, 17:54.9).
At the Manhattan Invite, McBride placed 5th in 13:35.40, Jensen placed 10th in 13:51.20, Gonzalez placed 14th in 14:07.30, and Deutsch placed 15th in 14:08.20.
