May 19, 2026: Have You Heard About Mosquito Fogging? There are safer, more effective, and less expensive options that better address the problem!
Outdoor fun and entertaining are right around the corner, which means mosquitoes are also heading our way. Recently, and with increasing persistence, mosquito fogging services and advertising are being offered to us. We want to make sure Bronxville residents understand all the details!
Mosquito fogging is a pest control method that uses specialized equipment to disperse a "fog"of insecticide into the air. However, there is no scientific evidence that mosquito fogging controls mosquito populations. It may provide a short-term fix, but it has many negative, long-term implications and is expensive.
-Non-Selective application: The insecticide also kills beneficial insects like bees, butterflies, and fireflies that are needed for pollination and wildlife. Research has shown major losses in biodiversity.
-Health concerns: The fog itself can be hazardous if inhaled. Residents are often advised to stay indoors and keep pets away during application. Scientific studies associate the chemicals with serious human health disruptions.
-Other environmental Impacts: The chemicals can also be toxic to fish and birds, and harm them by killing off their food sources.
The BETTER solution: Mosquito Dunks! A simple, low-cost, effective alternative that doesn’t kill anything in the process. The goal is to reduce pesky mosquitoes, not eliminate nature!
Mosquito Dunks are DIY buckets of water, leaves, and a mosquito dunk that sit in shaded areas of your property and encourage the insects to lay their eggs in the bucket. The mosquito dunk prevents the larvae from maturing into mosquitoes, which controls their population – the real solution! Right now, when mosquitoes are starting to breed, is the perfect time to set up your bucket. Learn more and how to make a bucket HERE.
Other ways to prevent mosquitoes:
-Remove standing water from your yard: refresh birdbaths and empty containers that have filled with rainwater. Anything that collects rain can become a prime mosquito breeding spot.
-Add native plants to your yard and garden beds. They will attract birds, bats, and dragonflies, natural mosquito predators.
-Use repellents for personal protection rather than fogging your whole yard.
Homegrown National Park, a call-to-action movement designed to regenerate biodiversity, hosts a Mosquito Bucket Challenge and offers additional fun tips such as decorating your bucket, answers frequently asked questions, and shows how you can add your name to the Mosquito Bucket Challenge map.
