April 16, 2025: Although most of the school is on spring break this week, the Bronco sports schedule continues with multiple games on tap. The turf teams managed to play most of their games in the past week despite unseasonably cold weather. The baseball team faced off against Tuckahoe and Hastings in temperatures hovering in the low 40’s, while the girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams endured wind, rain, and temperatures in the 30’s during their Saturday games.
Below is a look at how the teams have fared so far this season.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The boys’ lacrosse team opened the season with one of the toughest schedules in Class D. Ranked No. 8 in LoHud’s Power Rankings, the Broncos’ 3-3 opening record does not reflect their true talent or potential in Class D. Bronxville is currently ranked third among Class D teams in New York according to laxnumbers.com.
In the first week and a half of the spring season, the team faced some of the strongest teams in Section 1 and suffered losses to No. 5 Mamaroneck (10-9) No. 3 Iona Prep (19-7), and No. 2 Horace Greeley (16-7). Competing against top teams in higher classes should serve the Broncos well as they shift to Class D competition in the coming weeks.
The Broncos have three wins under their belt including a 16-0 win over Class D opponent Hastings and a 15-6 win over Fordham Prep. Scoring for the Broncos in the win over Fordham on Saturday were Nick Martinelli (5G,3A), Theo McMurray (2G, 3A), Brian Formato (1G, 2A), Thomas Freeman (2G), Harry Bacigalupo (2G), Brady Dolan (1G), Desi Heathwood (1G), and Max Nazzaro (1G).
Yesterday, the Broncos faced another top-ranked Section 1 team, No. 9 Tappan Zee, and pulled off a 12-10 victory with scoring from Martinelli (3G, 2A), McMurray (4G), Freeman (2G, 1A), Bacigalupo (2G, 1A), Formato, (1G), and Fletcher Van Tienhoven (1A). Tanner Vaughney had 8 saves.
The Broncos play a series of away games at John Jay Cross River, Pleasantville, and Blind Brook and return home on May 1st to face league opponent Edgemont.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Much like the boys’, the girls’ lacrosse team has started off the season playing highly ranked schools, and their 3-4 record says nothing about the depth of talent on the Class D Broncos. The Bronxville girls’ team is currently ranked 8th in Class D in New York State according to laxnumbers.com.
So far this season, the girls’ team—ranked No. 7 in the LoHud Power Rankings—has earned wins over No. 10 Wappingers (15-10) and Somers (12-11). They have also battled through close losses to No. 5 Suffern (8-7) and No. 4 John Jay Cross River (9-6). They played a very tough game against undefeated No. 1 Nyack, ultimately falling 15-11.
In yesterday’s matchup against Greenwich Central, the Cardinals came out strong and controlled the first half, taking a 10–6 lead. The Broncos rallied to tie the game at 12–12, but ultimately fell short, losing 14–12.
The Broncos will continue to compete against top ten teams in the next week with a home game tomorrow at 4PM against No. 2 Horace Greeley and away games against Yorktown and Ursuline, who are tied in the Power Rankings. at No. 9.
Baseball
The baseball team suffered through the cold weather this past week picking up two wins and one loss to bring their record to 3-2. The Broncos, who compete in Class A this season, defeated Ardsley 8-5 on Monday and fell to Edgemont yesterday 10-5.
In the win over Ardsley, Jack Gangemi earned the victory on mound and went 1-3 with 2 RBIs. In yesterday’s loss to Edgemont, Jackson Crystal led the offense, going 2-3 with a pair of doubles and two singles, Gangemi was 2-3 with four singles and an RBI, while Max Zarba was 1-3 and Matthew Curran was 1-1.
The team has a heavy schedule playing five games in the next week. They play at Edgemont tomorrow and at Albertus Magnus on Saturday.
Go Broncos.
