Chamber Chatter for May 25: Busy Week Ahead; Farmers' Market to Open Saturday, May 28

May 25, 2011: I just left the St. Joseph Parish Choir Spring Concert, where the choir sang Brahms's Requiem in memory of Alfredo Cruz. The performance was beautiful; the music and the voices of the choir were uplifting. Thank you to John Strybos, musical director, for this lovely tribute to Alfredo.
The fabulous sale at La Gravinese continues for the rest of the month. Take advantage of their "35%-off-for-35-years-in-business" sale on all in-stock inventory at the Bronxville store. Congratulations to Robert on his success!
Saturday, May 28, is the opening day of the 2011 Farmers' Market. This year, the market is celebrating its tenth anniversary, and that is quite a feat! It is a tribute to the quality of the vendors that Mary Liz Mulligan, the director, has gathered and maintained for ten seasons. This year, in addition to the veterans, there are five new vendors participating in the market. The season runs from May 28 until mid-November, from 8:30 am until 1:00 pm every Saturday, rain or shine. Stop by Stone Place and Paxton Avenue for a great selection of fresh produce and organic products from New York State.
This weekend, our village will host many activities in honor of Memorial Day. Here in the business district, Florence Restivo, owner of the Fine Arts Gallery, will have a very special window display. The Gallery window will have a scrolling list of the names of those from the 10708 zip code who have served our country from World War I to the present. Many of our merchants will be open during the holiday weekend; if you are staying around for all of the festivities, schedule some time for shopping and dining. We have something for everyone!
Weezie D will hold her "Most Memorable Memorial Day Sale Ever" this year! Everything will be on sale, no exclusions! This includes all dresses, all tops, all denim, all jewelry, and all handbags. Wow! The sale runs Friday through Monday.
For three weeks during late May and early June, four artists from India and an art historian will be in residency at the OSilas Gallery at Concordia College as the gallery inaugurates its International Artist Residency and Exhibition program. Visitors are welcome to view the artists at work between noon and 6 pm on "open studio days," Wednesday to Friday, June 1 to 3, and Tuesday, June 7. The artists will take to the streets of Bronxville on Saturday, June 4, and join the fun of our Sidewalk Sale! On Saturday, or "Plein Air Painting Day," the artists will set up in various locations along Pondfield Road and create masterpieces as you watch. These creations will be for sale, and the artists will accept commissions. For more information about this program, contact OSilas Gallery director Patricia Miranda at
Also, today is the last day to use our Bronxville "Brew-pon" at Pete's Park Place. Mention the "Chamber Special" and you will get a free draft beer with purchase of a burger. Find out about our weekly specials in our e-newsletter. To subscribe, contact the Chamber of Commerce at
We are gearing up for the 2011 Sidewalk Sale planned for Friday and Saturday, June 3 and 4. There will be great bargains, free parking, and lots of family fun. Hope to see you there!
See ya around town.
