Last Friday's Weekend Scoop for May 27, 2011

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!!!!
Do you know why we celebrate on May 30th?
Three years after the Civil War ended on May 5, 1868 the head of the Grand Army of the Republic established "Decoration Day" as a time to decorate the graves of those who died in war with flowers. Major John A. Logan declared that "Decoration Day" should be observed on May 30th because on this day flowers would be in bloom all over the country.
WHAT'S HAPPENIN'? Locally
Don't forget to go to Value Drugs and get everything you need to decorate your bikes, lacrosse sticks and whatever else you need for the PARADE ON MONDAY! i.e......Flags, crepe paper, ribbon
TREATS FOR THE WEEKEND! (whether its for the bakesale, hostess gift or Saturday's picnic - here are some of our favorites!)
For a starter - we love HUMMUS! Regular Hummus HUMMUS TAHINI or Black Bean Hummus! (and you HAVE to make your own chips - super easy!
We love this Chicken - SO GOOD to cook and bring down to the picnic or to someones house and throw on a grill - careful the grill isn't TOO hot - one friend renamed it PROPANE CHICKEN! SPICY GARLICKY CASHEW CHICKEN and for a sweet treat... POTATO CHIP COOKIES!!!
More stuff you can do if you feel like leaving the 'hood...
PLAYLAND!!! will honor our veterans on Sunday, May 29th beginning at 1pm with a family friendly celebration. The West Point Concert Band will be performing at the Music Stage Tower as well as a Helicopter Search & Rescue demonstration by The U.S. Marine Corp Air Ground Task Force. Plus lots more (not to mention the rides, games and junk food)
SALUTE OUR SAILORS AT FLEET WEEK in NYC. The city is AN AMAZING place to visit Memorial Day Weekend if you have never done it. First of all, many of the locals flee to hit the beach so reservations at most places are easy! And Fleet Week brings in the sailors who spend the weekend enjoying all the city has to offer. They are so friendly and they love meeting the kids and talking about what they do. It is truly a thrill for the little ones (and older ones) to speak with these very brave and proud men and women.
There will be Military Bands playing on Sunday in Times Square, between 1-6PM as well as a myriad of events throughout the city all weekend long. The best events are usually at the INTREPID Air and Space Museum including free Broadway performances from some of the best shows.
Need some new items for spring? Shop Bronxville without leaving your home on www.myhometownstores.com. I have to say (without being biased) that this site truly makes shopping (especially for gifts) so easy. I personally just ordered the two seersucker dresses featured this week on myhometownstores.com from Silver Spoon. My twin nieces are have a birthday next week and I got one dress in blue and one in pink, both size 4T. The on-line process took all of about four minutes. The dresses were boxed up and ready for me to pop into the store and grab. I hardly had to get out of my car. NO HASSLE! GREAT GIFTS! They would have sent them directly to me or to my nieces but I wanted to give them to the girls personally. - Lisa
