Sept. 28, 2026: There’s a lot of excitement around the Bronxville Giving Garden this year!

While organic vegetables have been growing since early spring, late summer and fall are when the bountiful harvest comes in! Enjoying another successful growing season, the garden is on track to produce more than 350 pounds of fresh produce, including carrots, scallions, beets, squash, tomatoes, potatoes, zucchini, green beans, peas, lettuce, chard, basil, and garlic.

This season we are especially grateful to Vin Spadafora, who has assumed the role of lead farmer, with assistance from veteran Farmer Dave Phillips.  Volunteer Sue Brownie tends the beautiful flowers along the perimeter outside the fence.

Farmer Vin has been hard at work growing, weeding, harvesting, and transporting the produce for donation to Community Service Associates (CSA) in Mount Vernon. “As a small soup kitchen serving roughly 100 meals each night, it can be a struggle to provide fresh, cooked vegetables every evening, especially while working with a tight budget,” says Jared Apuzzo, Executive Director of Mount Vernon CSA. “The Bronxville Giving Garden has truly been a blessing to our organization. Their generosity allows us to provide our guests with fresh, healthy, organic vegetables that we otherwise might not be able to afford. We are incredibly grateful for their continued support and are honored to have such a wonderful partnership!”

The mission of the Bronxville Giving Garden is to raise and donate fresh produce to help to address food insecurity in our area.  Feeding Westchester, which distributes food to partner food pantries and soup kitchens throughout the county, hosts an average of 222,000 neighbor visits each month.  Now, with reductions in SNAP benefits going into effect, that need is expected to grow.

September is Hunger Action Month. Perhaps you’d like to help by volunteering at one of the Bronxville Giving Garden’s partner organizations--at Community Service Associates of Mount Vernon here or at ECAP in Tuckahoe here.

The second half of the Bronxville Giving Garden’s mission is to engage the public to share information about food insecurity, growing vegetables, and how nature works to keep the earth fertile and able to grow the food we need.  That’s why we are also pleased to introduce Linda Howitt as the garden’s new Director for Community Engagement and Mimi McKenna as Assistant Director.

Linda and Mimi are creating new opportunities for the community to enjoy the garden – from youth educational programs to adult art classes, there is a lot of interest and excitement. Finally, you may have noticed new planting beds being prepared next to the Giving Garden.  We’re creating a new native plant garden!  More to come on this exciting project in the months ahead.

The Bronxville Giving Garden is a community-centered donation garden, located on Village Hall property on the corner of Pondfield Road and Gramatan Avenue. The garden is run by the Bronxville Green Committee, a volunteer organization that is part of the Village of Bronxville. We work to propose and implement environmentally sustainable programs in our community.
