Bronxville School Board December Meeting: Study Group Update and Other Highlights

Dec. 17, 2025: The Bronxville School Board held its last meeting of 2025 on December 16th.

The meeting began with a presentation by two fourth grade teachers and two fourth grade students about innovative projects they have created in the spirit of the “innovate” disposition of the Bronxville Promise.

Update From Bronxville School Superintendent

Bronxville School Superintendent Dr. Rachel Kelly spoke about the first meeting of a new Study Group formed to study the question of whether the Bronxville School should add lighting to its fields. 

The group began by defining the problem, which is insufficient field availability during daylight hours. There is also a bus driver and referee shortage. Each member was delegated a follow up task to research and report on for the next meeting on January 6th.

The Study Group will ultimately share what it has learned with the community and get input. 

Dr. Kelly then reviewed some School highlights, including the following:

-There are four “mini electives” in the High School that are taught by students.

-High School clubs have been doing fundraisers and food drives.

-A “Fan Bus” went to the Bronxville School Football Team State Championship Game.

-Orchestra, band and chorus concerts were held.

-7th graders collected and wrapped gifts for the holidays for Graham Windham.

-There have been Holiday breakfasts in the Elementary School.

-5th graders did a successful toy drive for Toys for Tots

-The Elementary School play is “Frozen Junior.”

Finances

Dan Carlin, Assistant Superintendent for Business, said that the financial projection for the year remains unchanged. Looking to 2026-27, he expects to have a draft for the finance committee and Board to review in January. 

He noted that health insurance costs will increase 8 - 9% and that the school is working on developing its own alternative for health insurance as an option. 

Carlin also said that the school is adding opaque screening to the flood pump shelter so that the pumps can’t be seen from Midland Avenue.

Carlin also spoke about an upcoming project that will include asbestos abatement, replacing mortar and bricks, bathroom renovations, and other work mostly in the Elementary School.  Work could possibly start this summer and probably will be done over two summers.

Other Matters

Dr. Kelly said they have begun exploring the possibility of adding an SRO (School Resource Officer) at the school.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
