Sept. 23, 2026: Historically, the Village was in hibernation of sorts in the summer months and former trustees used to joke that you could roll a bowling ball down Pondfield Road with no interference, but such is so not the case currently.

The Village Board of Trustees and the administration gear up for another whole segment of Village government as we prioritize all the projects that are quaint frankly major disruptions and slate them for the summer months when the Village is comparatively quiet vis a vis the school year.

To keep your current, I thought I would share a summary of some of the capital projects that were either initiated or completed over the summer months, as well as a look ahead to future items on our agenda.

The Department of Public Works solar roof installation is complete on our public works building on Palumbo Place and compliments other improvements made on the new facility to maximize energy efficiency.

We received full Con Edison sign off and the array of panels will completely power the building in addition to much of Village Hall going forward. I thank everyone involved, including our Green Committee in particular who was a major proponent of our adopting this design and in helping the Village obtain $100,000 grant from the NYS Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) for the project.

Cedar Lot Charging Stations

The four charging ports have come online and are fully functional and receiving very active use. They complement our Kensington Garage and Parkway Road Lot stations. The units were fully funded from a grant from Con Ed and Westchester County.

Paving and Striping Projects

Parts of Parkway Road, Midland Avenue and Prescott Avenue were repaved along with the west side bridge over Pondfield Road near Studio Arcade. Garden Avenue was also repaved following the installation of a new water line by the water utility. Other areas to be repaved this fall include Kensington Road and Sagamore Rd, both of which were also excavated for utility work.

We have coordinated with the water company and Con Edison as they undertook extensive projects adding much needed new waterlines and gas lines, which involved a great deal of disruption. The area is affected Garden Avenue and Kensington Road will be repaved accordingly.

The striping company has been in the Village for weeks as we do a very comprehensive restripe of our main intersections with the concentration in the downtown business district.

Sidewalk Projects

We added a much-requested sidewalk along Meadow Avenue between Pondfield Road and Garden Avenue to help our students. We also received a very favorable bid to add sidewalks and lighting over by Maltby Park which will add to safe transport of our families who use the park as well as people who frequent the very bustling Farmers Market.

Repair of the Milburn Wall and Staircase

Due to finance prudence, the trustees decided to repair the existing structures and not recreate an entirely new staircase.

The project should begin rather expeditiously as soon as a final bid is approved.

New York State Department of Transportation Pedestrian Improvements at Pondfield Road

We requested this project over a decade ago and currently sidewalks and ramps have been installed. However, some of the pedestrian poles have not been received by the DOT so project is in limbo but should resume in the coming weeks and will include new pedestrian countdown signals and crosswalks at the intersection.

Historic Street Sign Replacement

Thanks to the cooperative funding with our Bronxville Historical Conservancy, our DPW is installing and replacing many of our street signs back to their historical integrity. As of today, over 20 signs have been replaced with another 50 to be replaced throughout the fall and winter. This project has proven to be quite labor-intensive, but well worth it given the iconic beauty and historical significance of these distinctive signs.

Justice Court Audit

The Justice Court audit is complete and thanks to our two exceptional justices, William Primps and Natasha Nordahl, we continue to follow the guidance and requirements of the Office of Court Administration (OCA). The court is a vital source of revenue for the Village as we collected over $1.1 million in 2025, which significantly helped to reduce the tax burden.

Small Claims Assessment Relief (SCAR)

We just settled 24 cases resulting in Village refunds of less than $10,000 and another 17 cases were dismissed in their entirety reflecting the accuracy of the Assessment Department. As example, prior to reassessment, we acted on several hundred complaints and dispensed a great deal of funds to reimburse residents whose property was inaccurately assessed. Our neighbors who did not do reassessment are still experiencing overwhelming cash out flows for tax challenges.

Outdoor Dining

The outdoor dining program remains popular. The outdoor dining season is scheduled to end November 30. Restaurant owners are reminded to comply with the Village’s non-smoking requirement to ensure compliance with the NYS Health Department rules and the Village’s permitting conditions.

Gas Powered Leaf Blowers

A seasonal reminder that the use of gas-powered blowers is permitted from October 15 to December 15.

The Giving Garden

The Giving Garden has been a huge success with 380 pounds of fresh vegetables to be harvested and shared with the Mount Vernon Soup Kitchen and the Eastchester Community Action Program (ECAP).
