The Friendly Ghost of Mrs. Morgan

By Ken Hesselbacher

Oct. 28, 2026: It was a dark and dreary evening as I walked along Parkway Road in Bronxville.  I knew that Mrs. Morgan’s Flower Shop was celebrating their 100th Anniversary so I decided to sit on a bench across the street from this quaint store from another era and think about this accomplishment!

Suddenly I was startled by an elderly lady sitting next to me on the bench.  “I’m sorry, I did not realize that anyone was sitting on this bench.”

“Of course you didn’t” she replied, “I’m a Ghost.”

Well, since I had some experience with Ghosts in Bronxville, I asked,  “ Are you a friendly ghost ?”  She just smiled and replied, “  Yes, all the Ghosts of Bronxville are friendly!”

I ventured a guess and asked her,  “ Might you be the friendly ghost of Mrs. Morgan ?”  “Yes I am, but my friends call me Emily”, she replied.

“Although I am not a ghost I am friendly.  My name is Kenneth but my friends call me Ken.”

“Then I will call you Ken and you call me Emily.” she said.

“Emily, you are not going to believe this but last year on the eve of Halloween I met another Friendly Ghost of Bronxville.”

Emily said, “ Yes I know, you met the Friendly Ghost of Chief Gramatan.”

Astonished, I asked, “ Did you read the story in MyHomeTownBronxville last year?”

“Yes, it was a lovely article,” she replied, “ but I was also there that night.  After you left the bench on Sunset Hill, the Friendly Ghost of Chief Gramatan came over to my bench across from Mrs. Morgan’s Flower Shop.  He told me all about meeting you.”

“Emily, my wife Sandy and I took our two youngest grandchildren, Eric and Caroline, to the “Ghosts of Bronxville show on October 17th!  I know that they believe that you truly exist, but we live in such skeptical times, there are many who will not believe this story.”

Emily thought for a moment, smiled and said, “ Well, if they read about it in MyHomeTownBronxville they will certainly believe your story!”

Then she gave me a wink  and…..Puff, she was gone

Bronxville Public Library

Bronxville Public Library

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
