Apr. 11, 2018:  The spring teams have been challenged by unseasonably cold weather and snow, but the Broncos are back in full swing this week. While most of the games this week are away, the Bronco baseball, lacrosse, golf, tennis, and track teams have a full schedule.

The Bronxville baseball team opened in late March with a 2-0 loss to Pleasantville but came back the next day with a 9-7 victory over Hamilton thanks to solid pitching by senior John Marshall and reliever Zip Malley. The baseball team traveled to Orlando, Florida, over spring break, where they played at Disney and ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex. The Broncos competed against teams from New York and Wisconsin in five very competitive scrimmages and one official game and are now back in action in New York. In the league opener held yesterday at home, the Broncos lost 4-1 to Blind Brook but will face them again on Thursday at Blind Brook.

The Class D Bronco girls’ lacrosse team moved up in the LoHud Power Rankings this week to No. 3, just behind Class A schools North Rockland and Mamaroneck. Playing in the season opener against No. 8 Somers last Thursday, the Broncos fell behind and were down 9-4 with just 4:30 left in the game but rallied to score five goals and force the game into sudden-death overtime. Juniors Fiona Jones and Isabel Sondey came up with a critical draw in overtime, and less than a minute in, Jones scored the game winner. Scoring for the Broncos were sophomore Grace McSherry (4G), Jones (3G/1A), Sondey (1G/1A), and Anneke Pulkkinen (1G). Katharine Forst also added to the score with her first career goal and freshmen Alex Doukas and Vic Ruffo each added an assist. The team defeated Scarsdale 21-13 yesterday and will open at home today against No. 6 Fox Lane.

The Bronco boys’ varsity lacrosse team opened the season against some pretty tough competition. In the first two games of the year, the team lost to Class A Mamaroneck, ranked No. 5 in the LoHud Power Rankings, and Pelham, ranked No. 10. They picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating Lakeland/Panas 13-12.

“The win was a team effort,” said Coach Horgan. “We hope to build on it and get a streak going.” The Broncos continued the streak on Monday with a 19-3 win over Edgemont and will face No. 3 Iona Prep tomorrow. 

The golf team opened this week with a win against Edgemont and will play Rye Neck today before facing a very competitive Scarsdale team on Thursday. There is a lot of senior leadership on the team this year with Liam Bishop and Daniel Bettino serving as captains. Other returning seniors are Aidan Denning, Alex Swenson, and Leo Gretzinger; senior Jeff Sargent is a first-year player on the team. The golf team won the league championship last year and hopes to be league champions again this season and represent Conference 3 in the team sectional tournament.
