Apr. 18, 2018:  It was a winning week for many of the Bronxville varsity teams. The boys’ golf team opened with four wins, the girls’ lacrosse team had two impressive victories, and the track and field teams had a good start to their season at the Green Dragon Relays.

Because the varsity golf season starts in mid-April, every team in Section 1 faces some adversity. The golfers have a very limited preseason because of questionable weather, and they also have to deal with difficult course conditions. Very often, the teams who respond best to April’s adversity come out on top, which is what happened last week. The Broncos persevered through tough conditions on the course and defeated rival Scarsdale by just one point.

At the match held last Thursday at Siwanoy Country Club, both the Broncos and the Raiders were contending with difficult conditions. The Bronxville boys stayed focused, especially on the greens, to win the match 203-204. Senior captain Dan Bettino made many difficult putts and shot a 39, the best score of the day. Senior Liam Bishop, also a team captain, and sophomore Conner Stoltz both shot a 40, and senior Aidan Denning shot a 41. Sophomore Will Tormey and junior Charlie Preusse rounded off the Broncos’ scoring with very respectable 43s.

The Broncos, who also defeated Edgemont and Rye Neck in the past week, will play two more matches this week, including a rematch against Scarsdale today at Quaker Ridge Country Club.

The Bronco girls’ lacrosse team moved to No. 2 in the LoHud Power Rankings after defeating Fox Lane 12-7 last Thursday and securing a big 10-8 win over No. 7 Yorktown on Monday. 

In the game held at Yorktown High School, the Broncos went down 4-1 early in the game but came back to tie it up 4-4 before the end of the first half. Both teams came out in the second half determined to win. The scoring went back and forth until Bronxville took a solid 10-8 lead and stalled out the game for the last four minutes.

Fiona Jones had seven goals, Anneke Pulkkinen had two goals, and Allie Berkery had one. Alex Doukas and Isabel Sondey had one assist each. Sophomore goalie Catie Mooney had four saves, including one just before the clock ran out at halftime to keep the game tied. The Broncos advance to 4-0 on the season and will play North Salem on Thursday away. 

The Bronxville track and field teams made their annual trek to Cornwall to participate in the Green Dragon Relays, an event that features mostly large schools from across the tristate area.

The Broncos 4x800m relay team, Natalie Weiner, Patty Haggerty, Gigi Chrappa, and Caroline Brashear, placed 1st in 9:46.15, which gives them the number-one time in New York so far this season. The SMR team, Laura Holland, Ava Downs, Alisa Kanganis, and Eve Balseiro, placed 2nd in 4:23.77, and the 4x400m team, Rachael Peacock, Eve Balseiro, Caroline Brashear, and Laura Holland, placed 2nd in 4:05.69. Both teams are now ranked No. 2 in New York State. The 4x100m team, Alisa Kanganis, Ava Downs, Ava Black, and Remi Mellinghoff, ran 53.34 to finish in 7th place.

The boys’ track and field team also had a good showing at the Green Dragon Relays. The distance medley relay team, Matt Rizzo, Jack Kochansky, John Ryan, and Johnny Moynihan, placed 4th in a time of 11:24.54, and the sprint medley relay team, Rizzo, Kochansky, Jacoby Goodson, and Moynihan, placed 7th in 3:48.72. In field events, Avery Kane placed 6th in the shot put (40-0.5) and 10th in the discus (109-2). Billy Ramundo placed 8th in the high jump (5-6).

The teams were scheduled to participate in the Fulton Invitational on Monday, but it was canceled because of rain. They will compete on Saturday at the New York Relays at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.
