Karen Talbot on Specialty Food Shops in Bronxville: Dobbs & Bishop Fine Cheese

By Karen Talbot
Apr. 8, 2015: This five-year-old cheese shop was so needed in town since the last one departed many years ago and it didn't have regular hours!
Thanks to Kevin McNeil and Ruth Walker, husband and wife owners, this void is now filled.
Dobbs & Bishop is aptly named for where each grew up--Ruth, in Dobbs Ferry, and Kevin, in Bishopbriggs, Scotland.
Over the past five years, the shop has had more than 350 cheeses in stock, but they usually offer 90 to 110. They select for taste as well as process. They particularly like farmstead cheese, which is made at the same farm where the animals are milked.
Their most popular ones are délice de Bourgogne (a triple crème at $24.90/lb.), Irish cheddar (creamy and sweet at $18.90/lb.), and cacio di Bosco (truffle-infused from Italy at $28.90/lb.). Of course, there are lots of cheddars and blue cheeses to choose from!
For breakfast you can choose from Balthazar scones, croissants, and pastries, which are priced between $2.50 and $3.00. They have a broader range on the weekends, when people are home and eat a later breakfast or afternoon snack.
For lunch they have two kinds of sandwiches on a small baguette, $6.75 with meat and $5.75 without. I tried the prosciutto, cheddar, mustard, and watercress combo, which was very good, but it should have had more meat in it! Each day there are two soups to choose from. These are from Mio Foods in Scarsdale and my choices were forest mushroom bisque and shiitake mushroom, broccolini, and barley: small $4.50 or large $8.50.
Also, during lunch, the Bronxville school children go there to lap up the homemade macaroni and cheese, which is served warm in three sizes: $3.00, $6.00, and $8.00. You can even ask for extra cheese…delicious! No more Kraft mac and cheese out of a carton.
Dobbs & Bishop also stocks its shelves with pastas, honey, maple syrup, pickles, jams, olive oils, crackers, specialty cookies, mustards, and candies.
They also sell locally made cookies by What's for Dessert? Party platters and gift baskets are available from $30 to $200. This is the perfect place to pick up a hostess gift--what could be more welcome than something from this fine cheese shop!
There is a Cheese of The Month Club also, which offers 2½ pounds of two different cheeses for $30/month. Kevin will deliver free within two miles of Bronxville.
Dobbs & Bishop is at 107 Pondfield Road; 914-361-1770.
