May 7, 2025: The PTA Sustainability Committee kicked off the Earth Month festivities by welcoming Alex Eaves and Derek “Deek” Deidrickson from “Escape the Waste” on April 2nd. Alex and Deek have built a mobile home, called The Box Truck, entirely out of reused materials. The truck was parked at the Elementary School Canopy, and students had the opportunity to go inside and learn all about the materials used, where they were found and how Alex can live in such a tiny house!
Deek also had his upcycled art on display and spoke with art teachers and students about reusing materials to create interesting (and sustainable) art.
Middle School students and teachers were treated to an assembly to learn all about Alex and Deek’s unique journeys that led them to become REUSE experts. There was lots of talk about skateboarding, building treehouses, solving sustainability issues and many, many laughs!
Later that day, there was a public screening of Alex’s award-winning film called ”Reuse: Because You Can’t Recycle the Planet” at the Bronxville Public Library. The event was well attended by the freshman class, and the BXV Green Committee was on hand to educate about local sustainability efforts (please visit

Many students are sponsoring collections as a way to contribute to Earth Month. The High School Earth Club is recycling batteries collected from the school community, and a couple dedicated High School students are planning their second annual shoe collection for Project Happy Feet.
The Elementary School Student Council is running a soft plastics collection for NexTrex (a company that recycles soft plastics and turns them into playground and backyard equipment). And as always, the Council encouraged walking to school as much as possible!
The PTA Sustainability Committee ran their second annual “Earth Bingo” for the Elementary School. After executing earth friendly tasks such as turning off the lights when leaving the room, composting in the lunchroom or choosing their favorite tree, students could check off boxes and eventually achieve BINGO! On Friday, April 25th, Bingo cards were traded in for a sweet treat and a packet of wildflower seeds.
We are proud of our earth-friendly school community and will continue to encourage students to find creative ways to help the planet!
