From The Mayor: Update on Projects and Other Matters in the Village

By Mary Marvin, Mayor of Bronxville

Sept. 2, 2025: I consider September the start of the Bronxville “New Year” as it brings all our young people back to town, our vacationer’s home to roost and our downtown spring to life.

In that light, I thought it helpful to share all the projects that the staff at Village Hall has initiated or accomplished during the summer months.

The list is impressive indeed and the Trustees and I owe great thanks to the Village team who seem to have no quiet time anymore as we address issues and improve our beautiful hometown.

Crawford Drainage Improvement Project

Phase 1 was approved on July 21 at the Board of Trustees’ meeting which includes the construction of an open stormwater channel and detention basins to better manage runoff during heavy rain events in the area known as the Alfredo property. Work will also involve the replacement of sanitary sewer lines located beneath the field, which benefits many of the streets and their residents nearby. We are in the process of finalizing the construction schedule and overall project timeline.

A landscaping plan for the site, including the removal and replacement of some trees, will also be shared once complete. For more information on this project, please visit Village of Bronxville Current Stormwater Projects page on our website.

Phase 2 is being coordinated by the Town of Eastchester and will involve the installation of a new underground stormwater pipe along Crawford Street.

Library Boiler Replacement

The existing boiler was dismantled and a new efficient gas boiler installed.

Village Hall Boiler Conversion

This work is in progress as we await certification of our application from Con Edison for new gas service. In the interim, materials are ordered and awaiting utility approval.

Department of Public Works (DPW) Building Solar Installation

The contract for the planned solar panels on the roof of our DPW building has been executed, including design sign offs with our engineer and again we are just awaiting Con Edison application approval. Our construction start date is anticipated to be mid-September with completion by November.

Cedar Parking Lot Charging Stations

As a result of our participation in a Westchester County Intermunicipal Agreement, there will be four charging ports in the lot with all costs being shared between Con Edison and the county. We have yet to receive a start date for installation from county government.

Homedale/Sussex/Sherman/Homesdale Improvement

The Hamilton, Sussex and Sherman drainage improvements are complete and the Homedale/Sturgis catch basins are being installed as I write now that the Con Edison gas line has been relocated.

Paxton Avenue/Lower Millburn Flooding Remediation

FEMA has now agreed to fund up to $500,000 for paddle court restoration and discussions continue with FEMA and the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services for development and approval of a flood mitigation plan for the area.

Millburn Street Stair and Retaining Wall Restoration

Our engineers are developing plans and specifications for bidding, including alternate options to restore this stone structure. An initial plan contains options with costs ranging from $500,000 for repairing and rehabilitating the existing structures to $1.5 million for replacing the entire configuration.

Downtown Safety Improvements

A new crosswalk has been striped down the northeastern side of Meadow Avenue between Pondfield Road and Garden Avenue. The purpose of this new Meadow Avenue configuration is to channel students from the school up Meadow Avenue to Pondfield Road and then to Tanglewylde Avenue or Park Place rather than having students cross Pondfield Road at Meadow Avenue.

Both the school and the police department are on board with this pedestrian traffic redirection.

The crosswalk at Meadow and Tanglewylde Avenues has also been relocated to improve site lines and reduce the length of the crossing.

Road Paving and Curbing

Road resurfacing to commence later this month and include sections of Homesdale, Sturgis, Hamilton, Sussex, Sherman, Oriole and Tanglewylde.

Historical Signs Project

In partnership with the Bronxville Historical Conservancy our goal is to install 70 new brackets and 35 new posts to return many of our old and damaged signs back to their iconic look as many of them have been damaged by vehicular accidents and/or just faced the wear and tear of decades of outdoor conditions.

Public Right of Way Street Tree Planting Program

Another program in collaboration with the Bronxville Historical Conservancy is our joint committee to begin a new tree initiative. The group anticipates limited planting this fall followed by a full implementation of the $150,000 budget in the spring to replace so many of our beautiful street trees lost to age, disease or weather conditions.

Metro North Landscaping Improvements

After many years of conversation, Metro North has agreed to allow us to improve the condition of the embankments behind the railings on the New York City bound side of the train. We are in the process of enlisting partnership with our Working Gardeners and the Bronxville Beautification Council to clear and landscape the entry area by the Parkway Road parking lot.

Bronxville Board of Trustees Room Upgrade

We added a computer to our cable communications area so we can broadcast all Board meetings live on YouTube.

Internships/Summer Employment

We enjoyed the company and expertise of a student from the Bronxville High School and a Sarah Lawrence undergrad.

Also, 5 young men worked long and hard with our DPW team.

New Village Engineer

We now have an on-staff engineer so please welcome Ashaki Jacquet, a proud graduate of MIT. Her in house expertise will allow us to avoid contracting out projects thus streamlining our processes and application time.

Racquets Professional

The incredible Matt Evans has been recruited away to run the Ridge Hill Racquets program.

Maltby Park Awning

We are currently comparing specs for a shade pavilion to offer a roof, shading pocket for our youngsters at the incredibly popular Maltby recreation space.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
