A Buzzworthy Story

By Staff

May 2, 2024: Last week, Rob Deichert, a Bronxville resident, noticed a large number of bees in his neighbor's yard.

Some people might take notice of something like this and suggest the neighbor call a pest control company.

But not in this case. Instead, Rob, who is an ad tech executive and consultant, is also a beekeeper, so he sprang into action. As he says, he didn't have his "bee suit or normal swarm-catching contraption" with him, so he improvised and took the queen bee out of the tree to collect the bees.

The queen was put in a box which Rob put in the back of his SUV and drove to his apiary in East Hampton.

I asked Rob if he was worried about getting stung in the car.  He said he had "a couple hundred lose bees in the car, but they wanted to get in the box so there was no danger."

I asked him why they wanted to get in the box and he said, "the swarm follows the queen. I put the queen in small pill bottle with holes and she’s in the box."
Rob with some bees on another day when he had his bee suit.

Rob says if bees are not captured, they "will continue to look for a home, and that more than likely will be an attic of soffit."

Crisis averted!

The Bronxville Green Committee

The Bronxville Green Committee is a volunteer organization under Village government.  We work with the Trustees and Village staff on programs that promote clean energy initiatives and sustainable ways of living. Our programs include The Bronxville Giving Garden, a community garden whose produce is donated to local groups; Take Back Day, when we collect items to be recycled; and Pollinator Pathways, which encourages adding native plants to our gardens. We believe everyone can make a difference by adopting simple, sustainable practices in daily life so we can work together to protect what we love -- our families, our homes and our town.
