What You Missed This Summer
It's been a red-letter summer for Bronxville, with new businesses blooming all around! Newly opened are Stillmeadow Gourmet, Sharmin Faruque, Blue Mercury, and Beer Noggin. Take a tour to visit all the newest haunts! A shout-out goes to Admiral Real Estate Services for having a hand in all of these!
Think Through Your Purchases
Last month, I noticed that the Eastchester Public Library announced a party to celebrate its end-of-summer reading game, with a raffle for a gift card to a national-chain bookstore. I knocked on the library director's door and asked if she would consider purchasing these gift cards from a local, independently owned bookstore instead—i.e., Womrath Bookshop. "Well, that's an easy fix," she remarked. Later that day, Womrath received an order for 20 gift cards! Now then: How can you alter your spending? There's probably an easy adjustment you could make right away! Think it through!

Seniors living in Bronxville and in neighboring communities have a robust celebration awaiting them in Bronxville on Saturday, September 26: The third annual Salute to Seniors, organized by the Senior Citizens Council, Gramatan Village, and the Bronxville Senior Citizens, with support from the Village of Bronxville, NewYork-Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital, The Community Fund, and the Bronxville Rotary. The OSilas Gallery at Concordia College is celebrating its tenth season with the exhibition Season X: Celebrating a Decade, with an opening reception on Thursday, September 10, at 7:00 pm. The Bronxville Farmers' Market will be holding a small fundraiser on Saturday, September 12, in support of vendor Gaia's Breath Farm. In late May, there was a fire on its farm that totally destroyed two buildings that were going to be revamped this summer but were not insured at the time. One building, a barn that provided shelter to their pasture animals in severe weather, needs to be replaced before the cold sets in. The BFM will give free bags to all customers who support the raffle or purchase anything from Gaia's Breath that day. A frequent visitor, friend, and blogger for the Journal News, Chef Maria Reina from Bella Cucina Maria will prepare Gaia's veal meatballs and a pepper sauce for them and sides. Gaia's will be selling raffle tickets ($25 each) for a whole pig (which will be trimmed)! The winning ticket will be drawn on September 13.
Join Chabad of Bronxville for a four-course meal in celebration of the Jewish New Year on Sunday, September 13. Enjoy apples and honey, round Challah, and many of the traditional foods of Rosh Hashanah. Evening service at 7:00 pm; dinner follows. $36/person. For additional information or to RSVP, call Rabbi Sruli Deitsch at 914-458-2441. www.jewishbronxville.com
What kid wouldn't love to climb aboard a fire truck or sit inside a helicopter? Please bring canned goods to benefit Food Bank for Westchester. This year's event will take place on Saturday, September 26, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, at the Immaculate Conception School Field at 53 Winterhill Road and White Plains Road (Rte 22) in Tuckahoe (rain or shine).
