Feb. 11, 2026: Presidents' Day is coming up on February 16, 2026. We thought we would provide a little history and information about this Federal holiday.
Presidents' Day is always the third Monday in February.
The origin of Presidents' Day goes back to the 1880s when George Washington's birthday, which is on February 22, was first celebrated as a holiday.
In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act that moved several federal holidays to Mondays to give workers long weekends. During debate on the bill, it was proposed that Washington's Birthday be renamed Presidents’ Day to honor the birthdays of both Washington (February 22) and Lincoln (February 12). However, Congress rejected the name change.
Nevertheless, after the bill went into effect, Presidents’ Day became the commonly accepted name.
On Presidents' Day, banks, federal courts, mail service, the stock market and many schools, including the Bronxville School, are closed.
Interestingly, every year, Washington's Farewell Address is read in the U.S. Senate around Presidents' Day.
