Letter to the Editor: Caroline Kirby on Bronxville Young Republicans and Community Service

To the Editor:
Nov.23, 2016: Last year, with a presidential election year quickly approaching, current senior Ara Atayan--with the help of other Bronxville students--started a Young Republicans (YR) club where interested students of all affiliations could discuss politics in general.
The student response was immediate and enthusiastic, and this year the club has grown to over thirty members. Students--whether they self-identify as Republican, Democrat, or simply just have an interest in politics--gather during school lunch to discuss, present, and hear opinions on the election.
Julie Killian, a State Senate candidate this fall, came to talk to the club last spring--and many members got real-world political experience by volunteering for her campaign.
While in its primary year, the YR club mainly consisted of discussions and presentations of policy and current events, this fall the focus has shifted onto service. Though the weekly meetings will continue to address the political climate of the US, many members are interested in working to improve the Bronxville and Westchester community as a whole.
To kick off this new mindset, three seniors in leadership positions in the club along with some younger students decided to start simple. On Sunday morning, October 31, Ara Atayan, vice president Sean Mooney, and treasurer Sam Arcano headed a group of YR members in picking up trash along the streets of Bronxville. Community activism will continue to be a major component and goal of the club. Other projects are in the works, including a Habitat for Humanity build and a calculator drive.
The club is still in its infancy but has emerged as one of the most popular in the high school. Bronxville students have demonstrated an avid interest in politics and community service, and though its founding members will graduate this year, Bronxville Young Republicans will continue to grow as a positive place for discussion and activism.
