Medieval and Modern Times at the Bronxville Adult School

Oct. 7, 2020: Travel back in time through the Bronxville Adult School's History Happy Hour. These events will feature virtual lectures with Medieval History professor, Dr. Cristine Axen.

Dr. Axen will deliver intriguing, informative lectures about famous Medieval figures and Medieval manners. Her style is fun and dynamic, and the content of her lectures is engrossing.

You will learn about the tragic love of "Abelard and Heloise" (October 7th) that has inspired writers and artists for centuries!

Dr. Axen's "Women in Courtly Love" presentation (October 28th) will explain Medieval conventions and morés and allow you to compare Abelard and Heloise's courtship to the Medieval norm.

In her talk about "Joan of Arc" (November 20th), Dr. Axen draws on court documents from Joan of Arc's trial to enlighten you about the teenage French military leader, heroine, and
saint.

Dr. Axen's in-depth knowledge of her subject, coupled with her lively presentation, will illuminate, engage, and delight you!

If you want to learn more about the history of Modern Art, join the very popular Serdar Arat for "Modern Art from Leonardo to Picasso" ( Oct. 13th). What is modernism? How does modern art differ from, but also connect to the rest of art history? Why is Leonardo da Vinci, a Renaissance artist, considered modern? What connects Picasso's most radical abstractions to the medieval art of Europe? Is the art style of our own time still modern?

Questions and seeming contradictions like these will be discussed by experiencing modern and traditional masterpieces of world art comparatively. This colorful and often surprising exploration aims to clarify, define, and summarize key aspects of modern art.

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
