Bronxville Girls' and Boys' Varsity Soccer Players Host Alumni Games Thanksgiving Weekend

By Jane Sears
Dec. 13, 2017: For the second year in a row, former soccer players from the girls’ varsity team gathered at Chambers Field on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to join previous teammates and fellow alumnae for a competitive and fun game of soccer.
Approximately 24 former Bronco players spanning teams from 2000 to 2016 split into two squads (Blue vs Gray) for another battle of the alumnae with Coach Don (“Coop”) Cupertino proudly at the helm.
These ladies took the field playing two 30-minute halves, each calling upon old skills to generate a win for their respective teams. While some came equipped with their own cleats and shin guards, others had not owned these in years; but all showed up with energy, a sense of humor, and a huge dose of the old Bronco competitiveness.
In the end, the Blue team edged past Gray for a 4-3 win off a last-minute goal from Beth O’Connor. Maddy St. Onge had a great day, as well, netting a couple of goals to help the Gray team win.
Meanwhile, present and former members of the boys’ varsity soccer team gathered on newly turfed Hayes Field to kick off their first-ever alumni soccer game. Coach Donny Lucas assembled teams, and the boys went at it.
With fewer numbers for this inaugural game, substitutions were few, which led to Donny playing in goal. The level of enthusiasm and determination was heightened as the boys tried to score on their coach. Among the scorers for the boys were Andrew Dent, Matt Wagner, and Brewster Warble, to name a few. The boys represented teams from 2010 to 2017. The final score in this game was 6-5 with an immediate declaration of rematch for next year. And so the tradition begins for the boys as well.
Parents and fans of players lined each field enjoying the competition and connecting with old friends and fellow parents to relive the memories past seasons. Shots on goal produced loud cheers, as did great saves and defensive moves. It was a picture-perfect day for soccer, and everyone is already looking forward to next year.
The players and parents send special thanks to Karen Peterson for all her logistical support and to varsity coaches Don and Donny. They have built a program that goes beyond a program…it’s a family!
