Broncos Compete in Sectionals and Counties

May 25, 2022: The spring sectional playoffs are underway, and the Bronco teams have given the games their best effort. The top-ranked girls’ lacrosse team has easily won the sectional quarter and semifinals, and the boys’ lacrosse team battled against a strong Pleasantville team yesterday in the semifinals and came up with a win. Both teams have earned a spot in the Sectional Championship game.
The baseball team, seeded No. 1 in Class B for the second year in a row, endured a two-day semifinal elimination game against Albertus Magnus. The Broncos had a heart-breaking 3-2 loss to Albertus Magnus in the 15th inning yesterday. Also suffering a loss yesterday was the tennis team, who lost a close match to Edgemont in the team semifinals.
The individual Boys’ Sectional Golf Tournament took place last week, and junior Greydon O’Keefe qualified for the Section 1 State Team. The Girls’ Sectional Golf Tournament is underway this week, and Molly Stoltz is currently tied for 3rd.
The track and field teams competed at the Westchester County Championships over the weekend and came away with some strong finishes.
Below is a look at how each team fared.
Girls’ Lacrosse

The top-seeded girls’ lacrosse team (17-1) coasted through the early rounds of the sectional playoffs with a 20-2 win over Dobbs Ferry in the quarterfinals and a 21-3 win over Pleasantville in the semis. The Broncos will play No. 7 Albertus Magnus in the Sectional Final on Thursday at the Torne Valley Sports Complex in Suffern at 6:30PM.
In Monday’s semifinal game against Pleasantville, eight Broncos scored: Molly Krestinski was the top scorer with six goals and was followed by Catherine Berkery (5), Caroline Ircha (3), Kiki Tormey (2) and Megan Krestinski (2), Bridget Finley (1), Maddy Williams (1), and Katelin Petty (1) . Olivia Shinsato had two saves, and Gabbi Bici and Kate Gangemi had one save each.
Albertus (12-6) had a 17-10 win over No. 6 Briarcliff in the semifinals. Bronxville will meet Albertus for the first time in the Sectional final as they did not play them during the regular season.
The Broncos are currently ranked No. 1 in all of Section 1 and No. 10 in the US Lacrosse Nike National Rankings.
Boys’ Lacrosse

The No. 2-seeded boys’ lacrosse team defeated Haldane 17-1 in the sectional quarterfinals on Friday. The game was scheduled to be played at home in the late afternoon, but the Broncos chose to travel to Haldane to play at 2PM so that they could return home to attend the Bronxville prom.
In the sectional semifinals yesterday, the Broncos defeated a strong Pleasantville team, 11-7. Pleasantville had a 6-4 lead at halftime, but the Broncos came out in the second half and outscored the Panthers 7-1.
The lacrosse team will face Briarcliff in the Sectional Championship game on Friday at Lakeland High School at 4PM.
Bronxville, Briarcliff, and Pleasantville are top-ranked teams in the state according to the New York Sportswriters Association. Bronxville (13-5) is currently ranked No. 4, Briarcliff (14-4) is No. 5 (13-5) and Pleasantville is No. 6 (11-6).
The Class B Sectional Championship game will showcase two excellent teams. No. 2 Bronxville will face the No. 1 seed, Briarcliff, who defeated Irvington 15-4 yesterday to earn a spot in the finals.
Members of the Bronxville team have had some notable accomplishments so far this season. Senior Tommy Garafalo has surpassed the 200-career point mark, Junior Chris Patterson has scored 144 career points, and sophomore goalie Luke Arrighi got his 200th save of the season in the game against Haldane.
Baseball

The baseball team received the No. 1 seed in the Class B Sectional Playoffs and defeated Croton 10-1 in the quarterfinals last week. In the double elimination semifinals on Saturday, the Broncos lost 8-4 to No. 5 Rye Neck, putting the Broncos in a must-win situation against No. 3 Albertus Magnus.
In the game against the Falcons on Monday, the score was tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the 4th, and the teams battled for another six innings without scoring when the game was suspended for darkness.
Yesterday, Bronxville and Albertus took the field once again to continue the game in the top of the 11th. After 15 grueling innings, the Falcons scored to capture a 3-2 victory.
“Bronxville lost a heart-breaker today to Albertus Magnus in a continuation of Monday’s semi-final elimination round game,” wrote Assistant Coach Michael Schultz after yesterday’s game. “Junior Chris Lockwood dominated a tough Albertus lineup before yielding an unearned run in the top of the 15th, while Magnus’s Aidan Gallagher held the Broncos scoreless for 5 innings. Congrats to all the Broncos on a record-breaking 18-2 regular season and thank you Senior Leaders Danny Reilly, Aidan Sulimirski and Tyler Tanaka-Wong. And, special thanks to arguably the two best hitters and defensive players in Section 1 Class B, CF Peter Coquillette and SS Andrew Holub.”
Tennis

The tennis team competed in the Division 2 Tennis Team Tournament this week. As the No. 3 seed, they received a bye in the first round and defeated Lourdes 5-0 on Monday. Manu Monogenis won a tough match at first singles with a loss in the first set, a win in the second set with a tiebreaker, and an 11-9 win in a Superset tie break.
"I'm proud of the way our players competed today,” said Coach Steve Klurfeld after Monday’s win over Lourdes. “They were very focused, and overcame early match jitters. Lourdes is a strong team, so we had to play well, and I think our team did play consistently. Manu in particular played the match of the season in my book. He showed tremendous resilience.”
In the team semifinals on Tuesday at Harrison High School, the Broncos lost 3-2 to Edgemont ending their quest for a team title but finishing the season as undefeated League Champions.
Boys’ Golf

In the individual Section 1 tournament held last week, junior Greydon O’Keefe shot a 79 on Monday and again on Wednesday to finish in 7th place qualifying for the Section 1 State Team. The New York State Golf Championship will be held June 5th and 6th at Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.
Senior Eddie Hannigan shot a 167 in the Section 1 Tournament finishing 17th and earning All-Section Honors, and junior Owen Atkeson finished 26th with a score of 169.
Girls’ Golf

The Golf Sectional Tournament is underway, and the opening round took place on Monday at Spook Rock Golf Course in Ramapo. Senior Molly Stoltz tied for 3rd with a 74 and will advance to Round 2 at Whippoorwill Country Club today. The top nine finishers will qualify for the State Team.
Girls’ Track and Field

At the Westchester County Championships held on May 20th and 21st, the Broncos girls finished first in all three relays. Ava Black, Hope Hershberg, Maddy Stupart, and Katie O’Hare ran the 4x800m in 9:52.48. Juliet Winiecki, Danielle Dragoni, Milly Koenig and Donna Napolitano ran the 4x100 in 50:10 and the 4x400 in 4:06.01. The meet includes schools of all sizes from across Westchester County.
Top ten finishers
1500m racewalk: Scarlett Kane, 3rd, 8:39.46
200m dash: Danielle Dragoni, 4th, 26.52; Donna Napolitano, 6th, 26.91; Milly Koenig, 7th, 26.91
800m: Hope Hershberg, 8th, 2:23.00
Long Jump: Juliet Winiecki, 3rd, 16-0
Boys’ Track and Field

At the Westchester County Championships, senior Ellis Goodson placed 2nd in the 800m in 1:56.95. Goodson and teammates Albert Van Ness, J. W. Henningson and Dashiell Kwan had a strong performance in the 4x400m relay finishing 6th in 3:35.30. Also placing 6th was the 4x800m relay team, Andrew Jensen, Luke Corr, Kieran McBride and Ian Gegenwarth, who ran the event in 8:30.20. Jensen also competed in the 3000m steeplechase placing 7th in 10:38.40.
