Apr. 25, 2018: The boys’ tennis team lost its season opener 4-3 to non-league Edgemont but since then has won five consecutive matches, including shutouts against Briarcliff, Croton-Harmon, and Solomon Schechter. The team’s three singles players, sophomores Liam Krall, Charlie Nordahl, and Jimmy Hennessy, who play 1st, 2nd, and 3rd singles, respectively, are undefeated so far this season. Krall is a favorite to win the Conference 3 singles tournament this year and could potentially qualify for states.

The Broncos played Blind Brook on Monday, edging out the Trojans, 4-3. In a very competitive first doubles match, Colin McCloskey and Michael Swartz kept the Broncos on top with a big win in a third set tiebreaker.

“They were a good team,” said co-captain McCloskey. “All of our singles players won, and Michael Swartz and I won our doubles match to seal the win. We expected them to be good, and we held our own pretty well.”

The tennis team has a 12-man roster and includes freshmen Battle McFadden and Declan Broderick, who play second doubles. Playing third doubles are senior co-captain James Ackerman and senior Will Bogatyrenko and playing fourth doubles are freshmen Ted Conway and Amir Yaghoobi.

The team has won the league championship for the last three years and is a favorite to win again this year. The Broncos moved up one spot in the LoHud Power Rankings this week and are currently ranked sixth in all of Section 1. Horace Greeley, Harrison, and Scarsdale are the top three teams in the rankings.

Ted Garber, who has coached the girls’ tennis team for many years, has taken over the coaching job this year from long-time coach Steve Klurfeld, who is taking a sabbatical and teaching in England.

“I don't think there will be much of a challenge from anyone in our league this year,” said Garber, “but out-of-league we are playing the likes of Scarsdale and Harrison, which will be tough for us.”

The Broncos have a full schedule this week with matches against Dobbs Ferry today, Scarsdale tomorrow, and Briarcliff on Friday.
