Dec. 17, 2008:  The annual Bill Greene Basketball Tournament was held this past weekend at the Bronxville School. The tournament, which has been held since 1976, was canceled last year due to the flood damage from the April 15^th nor’easter.  Bronxville, Sacred Heart, Westlake and Tappan Zee participated in this pre-holiday tournament.

Westlake won the tournament, defeating Tappan Zee in Saturday’s final. Bronxville lost to Tappan Zee on Friday (66-56) and lost on Saturday in the consolation round to Sacred Heart, 53-49.

The two-day tournament is a warm-up for the winter season and is named for former Bronxville Athletic Director, Bill Green. Coach Green, a pilot in World War II, joined the staff at the Bronxville School in 1950. During his 35 years at the school, he coached varsity basketball, golf and was an assistant football coach.

Tom Troja, Bronxville graduate who played for Coach Greene in the late sixties, remembers Coach Greene as a nice guy who cared about his team and would always support his players. Troja was attending the Bill Greene tournament because his son Matt is on the varsity team.

The Bronco team roster includes senior Captains Brad Taylor and Trent Emanuel; juniors Noble Carpenter, Matt Troja, Brian Murray, Will Karol, Joe Wood, Jamie Mitchell, Chris Marasco, and Derek Richter; sophomores Jack Near and Dillon Mitchell and freshman Skyler White. In this tournament, the top scorers for the Broncos were Matt Troja (23), Trent Emanuel (18), and Brad Taylor (15).

Coach Brian Senior is in his third year of coaching at Bronxville. He replaced Lane Pettibone as an elementary physical education teacher. He has over ten years coaching experience at the high school and junior college level.

The team will play two away games before taking a break for the holiday and then will return home on January 7^th for a game against Valhalla.
