Young at Arts Announces a Full Summer of Performing Arts Programming for Kids Ages 8 to 18

By Staff of Young at Arts
May 10, 2017: Young at Arts, a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to using the arts to build bridges between communities and to provide arts education to children in need, is launching a summer of performing arts camps to suit every musical interest.
July 10–14: The members of Beyoncé’s fierce all-girl band will come together to offer a rare opportunity in the form of the Pop Music Experience. An all-girl power trio of teachers will push campers to achieve new heights in their craft while learning the music of the queen of pop, Beyoncé. Faculty includes musicians from Beyoncé’s all-girl band: drummer Nikki Glaspie, bassist Divinity Roxx, and saxophonist Kat Rodriguez.
July 17: Members of Broadway's The Lion King will offer a one-day master class. In four action-packed hours, students will learn Lion King material from a music director, an actor, and a dance captain from Disney's blockbuster. Aside from invaluable professional training, these guest artists will share behind-the-scenes stories about a career on Broadway and what it takes to get there. This exciting day will culminate in a full group presentation for friends and family.
July 24–August 4: Young at Arts will be offering two one-week mini camps that delve into a Broadway theme. Give us a week and we'll put on a show! Each week, campers will explore a different theme and dig deep into the theater repertoire. Camp will be spent focusing on proper singing techniques, acting exercises, and scene work. Students will also be exposed to opportunities in lighting, costumes, props, and stage direction. A camp performance will take place on the last day of each week, showcasing the scenes and songs that the campers learned during the week.
August 20–27: Young at Arts will offer its popular sleep-away camp, an experience that we like to call a magical, musical retreat! Our main goal for our sleep-away camp is to get kids out of the urban environment and into nature! Young at Arts is making its home this summer on the beautiful shores of Great Pond at Camp Runoia in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine. Join us for a week of making beautiful music underneath the stars and along the shores of the lake. Activities include singing, ensembles, and bands, as well as typical camp activities like swimming, sailing, hiking, archery, arts & crafts, cooking, sports, campfires, canoes, friends, and fun.

Founded in 2005 by director Sharyn Pirtle, Young at Arts is a dynamic nonprofit performing arts educational organization dedicated to helping young people expand their horizons and build character through music and drama. By bringing together children from different backgrounds in a collaborative environment, students learn skills that serve them well for the rest of their lives. Young at Arts serves an area encompassing the Bronx and Southern Westchester County, where over 50 percent of the children live below the poverty line and where arts education is virtually absent in schools. Children from different backgrounds share a love for the performing arts while developing the values of leadership, discipline, integrity, and community to make them tolerant, global citizens of our world.
