100th Anniversary of Bronxville Village Christmas Pageant: See Photos

Written by Staff

Dec. 31, 2014: The Bronxville Village Christmas Pageant, first performed 100 years ago in 1914, was performed on the hillside of The Reformed Church of Bronxville on Christmas Eve despite the downpour of rain that occurred the entire day.

As promised, a real live camel joined the usual procession of donkeys, shepherds, and wise men to the manger to see Mary, Joseph, and the Christ Child lying in a manger.  Angels watched on high and sang, as did the congregation of villagers who gathered on Pondfield Road and the hillside to witness the tradition.

Susanne Shoemaker, longtime chair of the Bronxville Village Christmas Pageant, and her committee spent many hours preparing for this anniversary pageant, including finding the players, mending the costumes, coordinating the ministers who spoke and the songs that were sung and, very important, procuring the livestock, including the camel, and making sure they behaved.
