April is Earth Month: FREE Delivery of Food Scrap Recycling Kits to Your Home!

By the Bronxville Green Committee

Aprl 3, 2024: In honor of Earth Day (April 22), which we’re celebrating all month long, any resident of the Village of Bronxville who signs up for the Food Scrap Recycling program and purchases a Starter Kit through the Village website will get FREE home delivery of their kit!  Delivery will be made on Friday mornings starting April 5th and continuing through April 30th.  You can sign up HERE.

Since Bronxville’s Food Scrap Recycling program launched in December 2021, we have collected more than 80 tons of food scraps.

-80 tons turned into organically rich compost in which to grow new plants

-80 tons kept out of the incineration facility in Peekskill, reducing energy use and pollution

-80 tons that saved the Village money because we pay less to haul food scraps to a commercial composting facility

-80 tons that Bronxville families collected and dropped off, teaching our kids not to waste food and that composting food scraps completes a natural, endlessly regenerative food cycle

Join the 300 households in our community that are participating in the program and making this important impact! “Our family of six feels good that our food waste is contributing to the creation of compost,” says Jenny Jaquette, a long-time participant in the program. “We also enjoy much less volume (and stench!) of household garbage. I highly recommend we all get onboard. It's easier and cleaner than you may think!”

Amy Krause, whose family has been participating since the start of the program, states, “We feel so proud to live in a community that implemented such an important project, offering residents the opportunity to be active participants in reducing their carbon footprints. The process is so easy and yet makes such a difference.”

The process is easy!

Bronxville’s Food Scrap Recycling Program, a turn-key residential program, makes it easy for residents to recycle ALL their food waste. This is not backyard composting; instead, it’s just another recycling stream in your home, created when you divert food scraps from your regular trash to a separate collection bin. Composting our food scraps creates a valuable soil amendment that is returned to the earth instead of being sent to a landfill to emit methane gas, which contributes to climate change, or from being sent to an incinerator, which creates air pollution.

The process is as easy as 1-2-3! Just COLLECT your food scraps, STORE & TRANSFER in a secure transfer bin, and DROP OFF behind Village Hall for commercial composting.

Learn more about this program, sign up, and purchase a Food Scrap Kit and we’ll deliver it right to your door! Sign up HERE.

You don’t need to purchase a Food Scrap Recycling kit to participate! Apartment dwellers, in particular, may find it easier to set up their own system.  The only requirement is that your scraps be delivered in a compostable bag—either paper or BPI certified compostable material (not biodegradable plastic, which simply breaks down into microplastics).  You can purchase compostable bags at Village Hall at a discounted rate.
