Eighteen Squash Players from Bronxville are on College Teams

By Staff

March 6, 2024:  MyhometownBronxville has written over the years about how Bronxville is a powerhouse of squash.

This was evident again this year in the success of the Bronxville High School girls and boys' teams, both of which ended the season #1 in the Fairwest League, which includes squash teams in public high schools in Westchester and Fairfield counties.

It is also evident in college squash. Right now, there are 18 squash players from Bronxville playing on college teams (see below).

Over the past few weeks, these college teams have participated in national and divisional championships at the University of Pennsylvania Squash Center and at the Arlen Specter Squash Center in Philadelphia.  There were many noteworthy performances. Below are some highlights.

The Harvard women's team, which includes sophomore Molly Stoltz, finished 3/4 in the National Collegiate Team Championship which included the top 12 teams in the nation. They defeated #7 seeded University of Virginia in the quarterfinals and fell in a close 4-5 match to Princeton in the semifinals. They ultimately ended up the #3 ranked team in the country behind Trinity #1 and Princeton #2.

The Dartmouth women's team, which includes freshman Ellie Clifford, fell to Stanford in the first round and then to Drexel in the consolation. They then defeated Tufts to finish 11th in the tournament, consistent with their seeding and as the #11 ranked team in the country. Ellie, a freshman, played in the #2 position on the Dartmouth team. Ellie said about her first season of college squash, "the team and coaches were amazing and supportive both on and off the court. It's a great part of college life!"

The Georgetown women's team, which includes sophomore Katie Hennessy, competed in the Divisional Team Championship, and had an outstanding performance. The team finished first in their division with wins over Bowdoin, William Smith, and Williams College, finishing the season as the #13 ranked team in the country.

The Bates women's team, which includes freshman Claudia El Masry, had a strong year improving its national ranking 5 spots to end the season 20th in the nation. Their solid performance had them competing in the same division as Georgetown, where they came up against tough competition. They faced #1 seed Middlebury in the first round, where they narrowly lost 4-5, and faced another tough team Amherst in the consolation.

The Hamilton women's team, which includes junior Gainsley Korengold, won its first round against Haverford College and ultimately ended the #28 ranked women's team in the country.

The Harvard men's team, which includes junior Conner Stoltz, finished 5th in the National Championship, losing to Yale in the quarterfinals. It then defeated both Drexel and Columbia in 5-4 matches in the consolation, with Conner winning his last match of the season convincingly 3-0. The Harvard men's team is currently ranked #5 in the country.

The Cornell men's team, which includes Daanyal Agboatwalla, also competed in the National Championship. They played UVA, Western Ontario, and Dartmouth and finished as the #9 ranked team in the country. About playing college squash, Daanyal Agboatwalla said, "I have really enjoyed playing for the team over the last couple of years, and it has definitely been one of my favorite experiences at Cornell. Working together with your teammates to achieve a common goal is so rewarding and fulfilling, and it is something that I would suggest to everyone who plays Squash to try."

The Tufts men's team, which includes seniors Harry and Sam Charlton, also had a great year. They earned the final spot in the National Championship after a strong regular season and finishing as runners-up in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship to Trinity College. At nationals, they lost to Yale in the first round and then narrowly lost to Dartmouth 5-4 in the consolations. They ultimately finished 12th, consistent with their seeding. Harry, co-captain of the Tufts team, who has been recognized as an All-NESCAC First Team member all three seasons, noted that "The excitement and camaraderie of college squash will be one of the things I miss most about my Tufts experience."

The Middlebury men's team, which includes freshman Charlie Clifford, also had a strong regular season, finishing as the #19 ranked team in the country. Charlie said about his experience playing for Middlebury, "The team experience at Middlebury is amazing, both players and coaches. It's a huge part of life here, and I've made many great friends."

The Bowdoin men's team, which includes Ben Korengold and Justin Barr, defeated Dickinson College in the first round of the Divisional Championship before narrowly falling 5-4 to Hobart College. They ultimately lost to Bates in the consolation finals. Bowdoin is currently the #24 ranked men's team in the nation.

The Hamilton men's team, which includes Tate Burgin, lost to Hobart in the first round and then defeated Dickinson College before falling to Bates.  Hamilton is the #26 ranked team in the country.

The Fordham men's team, which includes Robby Cruikshank and Peter Vorbach, faced tough competition from both Wesleyan and Vassar in the Divisional Championship and finished as the #33 ranked team in the country.

The Georgetown men's club team, which includes Brooks Clifford and Ronin Kaplan, also had a strong season.  They ended up as the #3 ranked men's club team in the country.  "It was a fun experience," said Brooks.

The Northwestern coed club squash team won the club coed championship. Junior Lainey Neild served as co-captain for the second year and played #3 for Northwestern. She went undefeated for the tournament, helping secure the victory for her team. When asked about playing squash at college, Lainey simply said, "Play. play. play. It's the best." Lainey's leadership in squash dates back to her days at Bronxville, where she was responsible for creating the first girl's squash team at the Bronxville School.
