What’s Happening at the Bronxville School?

By Staff

Dec. 6, 2023: The Bronxville School Board of Education met on November 16, 2023.

School Board Chair, Susan Conniff, opened the meeting by congratulating the High School on receiving the prestigious Blue Ribbon Award from the Department of Education.  She noted that this award went to 53 high-performing high schools out of the 27,000 high schools in the nation. She also congratulated the school on a successful tri-state review. Finally, the school has also been given a “platinum distinction” by the AP Honor Roll. The school offers more than 20 Advanced Placement courses.

Conniff talked about two recent workshops and a documentary related to antisemitism. Finally, she talked about places in the curriculum where students talk about current events.  This occurs mostly in social studies and history classes both in classwork and special projects.

Other highlights from the meeting include the following:

-Bronxville School Superintendent, Dr. Rachel Kelly, reported the following:

*the 7th graders had a trip to Williamsburg

*the faculty in the elementary school is reviewing the new New York State math standards.

*the School is doing an athletic survey for students in grades 6 – 11 to glean interest in various sports, such as volleyball, softball, and flag football.

*She congratulated Bronxville School science teacher Ben Kornish on becoming a US citizen.

Dan Carlin, Assistant Superintendent for Business, introduced the school’s auditors, who said that the school’s financial statements are presented fairly, and the school has an unqualified modified opinion which is the highest you can get.

Carlin also reported that the school is expected to generate about $600k in surplus this year, primarily due to higher non-resident tuition and interest income as well as savings in payroll.  He also noted that the outdoor classroom is progressing nicely.

Finally, he reported that the school is creating a “Pavilion-like” structure for the pumps.  The committee looked at several different options.  This was the most affordable option that provided the protection needed for the pumps.
