Spotlight on Carlos Juarez of Park Place Bagels

By Karen Talbot

Nov. 2, 2023: Carlos Juarez is an energetic man with a big heart. Born in Mexico, he has been in the United States for over twenty years.

If you buy breakfast or lunch at Park Place Bagels in Bronxville, you will likely see him smiling behind the counter. Carlos has worked at Park Place for the past fifteen years.

Carlos enjoys getting to know his customers, especially the middle school and high school children who come into Park Place for lunch.

What you may not know about Carlos is that he has a passion for running marathons, and his goal is to encourage others to run in them as well. His personal goal is to run a marathon in all fifty states. So far, he has completed thirty-three marathons in twenty states.

What is so special about Carlos is that when he runs a marathon, he also raises money for non-profit organizations such as the One Love Foundation. Based here in Bronxville, the mission of One Love is to educate young people about healthy and unhealthy relationships and to empower them to avoid abuse.

On Sunday, Nov. 5th, Carlos will run in his 5th New York City Marathon and will raise money for You Gotta Believe, a New York-based national organization that specializes in finding permanent families for young adults, teens, and pre-teens in foster care.

Carlos began his marathon journey seven years ago at age forty-one. Over that time, he has run local marathons, such as the New York and New Jersey marathons, as well as more distant ones, including the San Francisco marathon. The Boston Marathon is one of his favorites, and he has run in it for the past five years.

Carlos trains about eight miles a day or around fifty miles a week. His longest training route is on the Bronx River path from Bronxville to the Kensico Dam and back.

Good Luck, Carlos, in the New York Marathon this weekend! Our village will be rooting for you!
