Oct. 13, 2023: Homecoming came to a close on Saturday evening as the boys’ soccer team defeated Dobbs Ferry 2-0 to capture its 3rd win of the week. In that game, Dimitri Hanjis and Sam Becker scored for Bronxville with assists from Sebastian Wortel and Federico Pirelli. The Broncos are now 6-4-1.

The official homecoming games for the JV and varsity soccer team took place on Thursday. The JV game was played at 4:30, and spectators enjoyed the variety of choices from the food trucks nearby. The varsity soccer team took the field at 7:00 with a game against Albertus Magnus, and at halftime, the annual community pep rally took place as varsity teams were introduced on the field.

The Broncos, who had lost to Albertus Magnus 1-0 in mid-September, took a 1-0 lead in the first half and scored again at the beginning of the second half. The Falcons one and only score came halfway through the second half giving the Broncos a 2-1 win. In that game, goals were scored by Lucas Gonzalez and Chris Horvers, and keeper Miles Jernigan had eight saves.

It was a busy week for the boys’ soccer team who played in the finals of the Broncofest tournament on September 30th at Valhalla.  The game was scheduled to be played at Bronxville, but flooding rain closed Chambers Field.  The Broncos won the Broncofest by defeating Valhalla 1-0. In the game against the Vikings, Hanjis scored for Bronxville with a cross from Cooper Keating at the 9-minute mark, and the defense was able to hold off Vahalla with some great saves from Jennigan. Wortel and Charlie Hodulik were named All-Tournament players and Nick Gonda was Tournament MVP.

The girls’ cross country team won the Section 1 Conference 3 Extravaganza at Woodlands High School last Tuesday. Racing against 18 Conference 3 teams on a very muddy course, both the varsity and freshman teams finished first in their respective divisions.

The varsity team won with a score of 45 and had seven girls finish in the top 20.  Maddy Williams finished 4th overall in 21:56.0 and was followed by Meghan Curran (5th, 22:39.7), Charlotte Black (12th, 24:11.0), Charlotte Murray (14th, 24:35.8), Quinn Sheehan (17th, 24:50.2), Isa Washburne (18th, 24:54.7), and Fiona Keveney (20th, 25:09.2).

The Bronxville freshman had an outstanding 1.65 mile race with Bronxville girls taking the top six places: Ella McCalla  (1st, 12:10.5), Carina Winiecki (2nd, 12:10.5), Eva Milhova (3rd, 12:10.5), Emerson Dennis (4th, 12:56.1), Ee-Ee Sung (5th, 13:01.5), and Charlotte Dorr (6th, 14:11.1).

“We have a busy week ahead with the League Championship taking place at Woodlands HS and then the storied Manhattan Invite down at Van Cortlandt Park this Saturday,” said Coach Brian Halling.  “We're excited to see the girls compete again and have been truly impressed by their growth throughout the season.

The regular season for the girls’ tennis team ended last week, and the Broncos finished with a league record of 4-3. The Broncos had wins over Scarsdale B, Blind Brook, and Rye Neck and losses to Rye Neck and Scarsdale B

The team also lost to Edgemont in a super set tiebreaker in September and was hoping to have a rematch at the National Tennis Center, but it had to be rescheduled because of rain.

The individual Sectional tournament is underway this week, and Victoria McEnroe received the No. 1 seed after winning the New York State Championship last year.  In the semifinals yesterday, McEnroe defeated Scarsdale’s Charlene Dong, 7-6, 7-5, to advance to the championship match tomorrow against Eastchester’s Anselma Petri. Last week, McEnroe was named Con Ed Scholar Athlete of the Week by Lohud.
