Letter to the Editor Regarding a Crosswalk Across Route 22

Note: Shelley B. Mayer is a New York State Senator representing the 37th District of New York which includes Bronxville.

Sept. 27, 2023

To the Editor:

I write this letter to express my strong support for the construction of a crosswalk on Route 22, a state road, between Elm Rock Road and Paddington Road. I attended and spoke at the last Bronxville Village Board meeting to make that clear, and to reassert that the state funds I allocated for this project remain available. Prior to allocating the funds, of course I conferred with NYS DOT and the Village as we collectively sought to find a way to pay for the development of the crosswalk, which met all necessary standards. As you know, the location was approved by three separate consultants and approved by the NYDOT.

As a parent and grandparent, and as Chair of the Education Committee in the Senate, I am a strong supporter of finding safe ways for children (and their parents) to walk to school, if possible. I believe a crosswalk equipped with rapid flashing beacons as proposed here will provide a safe alternative to the current crossing situation and facilitate the safety of parents and students alike.

I am hopeful the Board will support the project, as they have done previously on multiple occasions and that the state funding I have allocated will help make this a reality for the residents of Bronxville.

Sincerely,

Shelley B. Mayer
