All,
It was a busy evening last night resulting in a large police presence and multiple searches throughout the Village.
It started at 7:33pm when an alert resident called us after seeing a suspicious male on the property of a Homesdale Road residence. The caller was able to provide a license plate of the vehicle that the subject left in – a check of the license plate revealed it was an active stolen vehicle from New Jersey. Our Officers responded immediately and conducted a search of the home and surrounding residences. Our search of the home revealed that entry into the home was not attempted, and the subject was likely checking vehicles in driveways.
During our search of neighboring properties, we found that an unlocked vehicle with the key fob inside had been stolen from a driveway nearby. A short time later, these two vehicles were pursued by multiple police agencies throughout Manhattan and into New Jersey – unfortunately, no arrests were made but both vehicles were recovered at different locations in New Jersey.
Overnight in an unrelated case, at about 3:34AM the County Police pursued a stolen vehicle into the Village, which crashed in Morange Square. The three occupants of the vehicle fled on foot and were chased from the west side to Garden Avenue to Tanglewylde Avenue by multiple police officers. After separating and fleeing through numerous yards while scaling fences these subjects were able to flee and were not arrested.
If you live in proximity to any of the above locations and have cameras on the exterior of your home, please review the footage during the periods and let us know if you have any valuable recordings.
Motor vehicle thefts and larcenies from parked vehicles continue to account for most of the crimes committed within the Village. The rise in these crimes throughout NY, NJ and CT is continuing.
Please always lock and alarm your vehicle – even during the day when parked in your driveway for a short period of time. Never leave your key fob within the vehicle when parked. Even when locked do not leave anything of value in plain sight within the vehicle. These subjects often arrive in a stolen vehicle and walk neighborhoods looking for unlocked vehicles with fobs inside. Unfortunately, considering the lack of serious consequences in place the subjects do not fear arrest and often lead police on dangerous high-speed pursuits.
We need your help to prevent these thefts and reduce the risky pursuits. Report suspicious subject(s) or activity immediately to the Police Department and always lock and alarm your car.
Any questions or concerns you can always reach out to me directly.
Thank you
Chief Christopher Satriale
