June 7, 2023: According to the
U.S. Air Quality Index maintained by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, New York's air quality was deemed "Unhealthy" on June 7. The site makes the following recommendations:
"People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens – take any of these steps to reduce your exposure:
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
- Keep outdoor activities short.
- Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.
Everyone else – take any of these steps to reduce your exposure:
- Choose less strenuous activities (like walking instead of running) so you don’t breathe as hard.
- Shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors.
- Be active outdoors when air quality is better.
Additionally, in a press release on June 7, the Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler, MD, recommended that "all residents limit any strenuous outdoor activity and the very young, those with respiratory conditions or heart disease reduce their time outdoors due to the fine particulate matter in the air from Canadian wildfires in Quebec that is causing a haze across our region."
