Tennis Team Wins Sectional Championship and Track and Field Teams Win Five County Titles

May 24, 2023: Talent, hard work, and determination have pushed the Broncos to the top of their game this spring.

The boys’ tennis team won the Team Sectional Championship on Sunday and is continuing to compete in regionals this week.  Singles tennis player Patrick Kenny qualified for the Individual State Tennis Championship, and golfers Greydon O’Keefe and David O’Shaughnessy have qualified for the Individual State Golf Championship.

The outdoor track and field teams competed at the Westchester County Championships last week taking home five County Titles and will continue their season as they compete in the Section 1 Class C Championships and the State Qualifiers in the coming week.

The boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams are in the midst of the Sectional Playoffs. The girls’ team, the defending Class D State Champs, will play against Briarcliff in the sectional final tomorrow at Nyack High School. The boys’ lacrosse team defeated North Salem in the first round of playoffs and continues their games this week.  

The Bronco baseball team had an incredible season finishing as League Champion with a 19-4-1 record. They ended their season this week with crushing losses in extra innings to Albertus Magnus on Sunday (2-1) and to Croton-Harmon on Monday (4-3).

Tennis

On Friday, the Bronxville boys’ tennis team won the Section 1 Division 2 title, defeating defending champion No.1 Byram Hills 3-1.  All three singles players won their matches- Patrick Kenny, Max Monogenis, and Jackson Fino. 

The team came into the tournament as the No. 6 seed.  They beat their first-round opponent Irvington 3-0, and then beat No. 4 seed Briarcliff 3-0 in the quarterfinals.  In the semifinals, the Broncos beat No. 2 seed Edgemont, and then clinched the Section Championship prevailing over Byram Hills. The highlight in the match against Edgemont was Max Monogenis coming from behind to win his 2nd singles match in a super tie-break. Additionally, Bronxville's No. 1 singles player Patrick Kenny gave up no more than two games in a set. 

“The team tournament was a thrill, and I am super proud of the team,” said Coach Klurfeld.

The Bronxville tennis team headed to the regional round of the New York State Championships in Middletown on Monday.

The Broncos sailed through their first match against Spackenkill High School (Poughkeepsie) winning all five matches decisively. The team will play their second match against Delaware Academy on May 25th at the Binghamton Tennis Center.

The winner of the East, West, North and South regions will play in the final four on June 9th at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Outdoor Track and Field

Competing against schools of all sizes across Westchester, the Broncos excelled at the County Championships winning five County Titles.  

Placing first for the Bronxville girls were Kara Kochansky in the 400m in 1:00.34, the 4x100m relay team (Juliet Winiecki, Mai Ly Reinking, Kara Kochansky, and Danielle Dragoni) in 49.91, and the 4x800m relay (Hope Hershberg, Maddy Stupart, Katie O'Hare, Maddy Williams) in 9:39.79.

On the boys’ team, Max Dicker placed first in the pole vault in 12-6, and the 4x800m relay team (J.W. Henningson, Andrew Jensen, Kieran McBride, and Ellis Goodson) won the event in 8:10.56.

Also having strong finishes were Maddy Williams who placed 3rd in the 1500m in 4:51.01, and Colette Ungvary who placed 2nd in the pentathlon. Danielle Dragoni placed 4th in the 200m in 25.94.

Davis Patterson placed 4th in the 400m in a new school record time of 50.20, and Wyatt Gravier placed 3rd in 110m hurdles in 15.82. In field events, Finn Sands placed 3rd in the high jump in 6-0, and Alex Napolitano finished 4th in the hammer throw (148-9).

The boys’ 4x400m relay (Dash Kwan, Javier Tomala-Reidel, Gavin Benton, and Davis Patterson) placed 3rd in a time of 3:29.96.

Golf

Greydon O’Keefe and David O’Shaugnessy earned spots on the Section 1 State Team with strong finishes at Sectionals. O’Keefe placed 4th overall, and O’Shaughnessy placed 8th. Nine Section 1 golfers will compete at the New York State Championship, which will be held at the Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira on June 4th.

Lacrosse

Bronxville lacrosse teams have some very tough competition in Section 1 as Bronxville, Pleasantville and Briarcliff are all top-ranked in the state.

The Bronxville girls, the No. 2 seed in the Class D Sectional Tournament, sailed through the early rounds by defeating No. 15 Putnam Valley 14-2 in the first round, No. 10 Westlake 16-5 in the quarterfinals, and yesterday, they defeated No. 3 Pleasantville 15-5. The 11-7 Broncos will play No. 1 Briarcliff (17-1) in the sectional final tomorrow at Nyack High School.

The boys’ lacrosse team (seeded No. 5) defeated No. 12 North Salem 16-1 in the first round of the Class D playoffs, and will continue on with games this week.

On Friday, May 19, the Bronxville Boys tennis team won the Section 1 Division 2 title, defeating last year's winner Byram Hills 3-2.  All three singles players won their matches - - Patrick Kenny, Max Monogenis and Jackson Fino. 

The team then headed to the New York State Championships in Middletown, New York on Monday, May 22nd.  

The Broncos sailed through their first match at the State Championships against Spackenkill High School (Poughkeepsie) winning all five matches decisively. The team will play their second match tomorrow May 25th at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
