May 17, 2023: Spring playoffs get underway for some Bronxville teams this week, but the Section 1 Individual Tennis Championship finished up last night. Freshman Patrick Kenny finished as the Section 1 runner-up and has qualified for the New York State Championship in June.

The baseball and lacrosse teams have home field advantage this week for the early rounds of the playoffs, and there should be several good games.  Today at 4:30, the Bronco baseball team, seeded No. 1 for the third year in a row, takes the field against No. 9 Byram Hills in the Section 1 Quarterfinals. On Friday, the girls’ lacrosse team (No. 2) will play at home in the Sectional Quarterfinals, and on Saturday the boys’ lacrosse team (No. 5) will play Dobbs Ferry (No. 12).

The track and field teams will compete at the Westchester County Championships this coming weekend, and the Boys’ Team Tennis Championship begins on Friday.

Below is a look at how each team has fared.

Tennis

The Individual Section 1 Boys’ Tennis Championship finished up last night at Harrison High School. Bronxville freshman Patrick Kenny finished in second place after losing 6-3, 7-5 to White Plains’ Callum Markowitz, the top seed the sectional finals.

Kenny, who competes in top National Tournaments around the country, joined the Bronxville tennis team in 7th grade. He was sidelined with an injury in 8th grade but is happy to be back on the Bronxville team this year.

“This high school tennis season has been all I could have hoped for and more. Forming a special relationship with my teammates has led to this being the most fun I‘ve ever had on a tennis court," said Kenny.

In the semifinal match against Maxim Kalinin from Mamaroneck, Kenny was down 3-1 in the third set but was able to turn it around to win the match.

“When I was down in the third set, I really had to dig deep, but when I got up to 3-3, I had the momentum and just wanted to get it done. This was my 6th time playing against Maxim, and it was the first time I had beaten him.”

Also competing at the Sectional Tournament were freshman Max Monogenis and 8th-grader Jackson Fino. This doubles pair won two matches making it to the quarterfinals and earned All-Section honors. Also qualifying for the Sectional Tournament was the doubles team of Charlie Clifford and Jay Marshall.

The Section 1 Team Tennis Tournament will start Friday as No. 3 Bronxville takes on No. 14 Valhalla at Harrison High School.

Boys’ Outdoor track and field

There were some very impressive finishes for the Broncos at the Friendship Games last weekend. Dash Kwan, Max Dicker, Javier Tomala-Reidel, and Davis Patterson ran the 4x100m relay and set a new school record in the event with a time of 44.22.

“Any time we have a school record broken, it speaks volumes towards the commitment and dedication of the athletes involved, especially given the tremendous history of our team,” said Coach Brian Halling. “This particular record had stood since 1998 when a 4x100m team from Bronxville achieved the old mark at the New York State Championship.  We're very excited to see how these boys grow and improve throughout the remainder of the season.”

In addition to the boys’ 4x100m, Dash Kwan, Gavin Benton, Javier Tomala-Reidel, and Davis Patterson ran a 3:26.42 in the 4x400m, which hit the New York State Super Standard guaranteeing them a spot at the New York State Championships. This time ranks the 4x400m relay team No. 3 in the state in Division 2.

Baseball

Senior Day (l to r): Jaime Valdes, Jeremy Freeman, Ethan Jaquette, Ted Heraty, Chris Lockwood, David Lopez-Ryan and Jack Deneen.

The top-ranked Class B baseball team (18-2-1) finished the regular season with a seven-game winning streak, the League Championship, and many League honors. Chris Lockwood was named League Pitcher of the Year, Ethan Jaquette was recognized as League MVP, and Ted Heraty was named to the Diamond 9+1.

The baseball playoffs are underway, and the No. 1 Broncos defeated No. 16 Ardsley 7-3 on Monday and will face No. 9 Byram Hills at home today at 4:30. The semifinals will take place on May 20th at the higher seed.

In the game against Tuckahoe on May 8th, Coach Michael Schultz won his 100th game and has been named League Coach of the Year.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The girls’ lacrosse team (9-7) is the No. 2 seed in the Class D playoffs and defeated No. 15 Putnam Valley 14-2 yesterday. They will play No. 10 Westlake     in the quarterfinals at Chambers Field on Friday.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The boys’ lacrosse team defeated Class C Rye 8-6 yesterday to finish the regular season with a 6-10 record. The Broncos are seeded No. 5 in the Class D playoffs and will face No. 12 North Salem on Saturday at Chambers Field. The winner of that game will play on Tuesday at the higher seed.

Boys’ Golf

In the first round of Section 1 Golf Championship on Monday, three Broncos qualified for the second round. Greydon O’Keefe was the low scorer with a 78 and was followed by Charles van Tienhoven with an 80 and David O’Shaughnessy with an 85. They will play in the second round today at the Trump National Golf Club Hudson Valley. The golfers who finish in the top nine qualify for the New York State Championship.

Go Broncos.
