Bronxville NPC Now Accepting Applications for School Trustee Candidates

By Bronxville Non-Partisan Committee

Feb. 8, 2023: The members of the Bronxville Non-Partisan Committee (the "NPC"), would like to announce the opening of our application and nomination process for candidates to run in the election for the Bronxville School District’s Board of Trustees.

Applications are now available at bronxvillenpc.org and are due by Wednesday, March 1.

The school board trustee election will be held on Tuesday, May 16th, to fill two vacancies on the school board, due to the second terms of Jennifer Russo and Michael Finley ending.  We commend both trustees for their six years each of stellar service to the community - we are truly grateful and indebted to these public servants.

We invite any resident interested in running for the school trustee role to reach out to any member of the Bronxville NPC personally or to contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to discuss our application process or to suggest potential candidates.

As a reminder, applying to the NPC is not a requirement for running in the school trustee election, the requirements for which are set by New York State Law.[1]

What is the Bronxville Non-Partisan Committee

The Bronxville NPC’s mission is to ensure that qualified candidates run in our district’s non-partisan election for school board trustees.  Since 1936 when the NPC Plan was adopted, this committee of 21 elected volunteers has helped to ensure that qualified candidates stand for the school trustee election.

We believe that providing the community with this baseline of qualified candidates has contributed to the strong history of school board governance that our community enjoys.  While not without missteps in its 87-year history, the effectiveness of our system is reflected in the Bronxville School’s excellence and its ability to attract talented educators.

What is the NPC’s Criteria for Selecting Nominees

The NPC criteria for selecting candidates is set forth in the NPC Rules of Procedure, which in addition to the NY state minimum legal requirements, include the following:

It is the policy of the Committee that a nominee for Trustee shall be an individual whose educational or professional background and/or volunteer experience will enhance the candidate’s effectiveness and who will make a substantial contribution to the deliberations of the Board. The candidate must be knowledgeable about the needs of the Bronxville School and community and must be a registered voter in the Bronxville, N.Y. election district. Candidates must be aware of the heavy time requirements for service on the Board of Trustees, and prepared to make allowances in their vocational and personal commitments so that they will be able to attend all meetings and fulfill committee assignments.

Both the NPC Plan and the Rules of Procedure are available for your review on our website at www.bronxvillenpc.org.

How Does the NPC Nomination Process Work?

Following March 1st, NPC members reach out to applicants to schedule interview sessions with the full NPC membership.  In addition, a subcommittee of the NPC will vet all applicants by seeking feedback from the community and contacting references. Community feedback on applicants should be fair and objective and reflect firsthand knowledge of the feedback provider.

Following its due diligence, the NPC meets to discuss applicants’ qualifications and then votes on which applicants should be nominated as its candidates for school board trustee.

The NPC nominees will be announced and placed on the ballot, and the community will have an opportunity to meet the candidates on the evening of April 19th.  All residents are encouraged to join the NPC mailing list at bronxvillenpc.org to receive our announcements and updates.

What If I Have Feedback on the NPC Process

Since 1984, an independent review of our Plan and Rules of Procedures has been performed by a separate community volunteer group called the Advisory Review Committee (“ARC”).  This year we have seven individuals who graciously volunteered their time to collect feedback from the community and will issue a report of recommendations in the Spring.

The report will recommend any changes that should be made to the NPC Plan or to the NPC Rules of Procedures.  Changes to the Rules of Procedure will be voted on by the current 21 members of the NPC.  Any recommended changes to the NPC Plan itself would be put to a vote of the community residents.

We strongly encourage the community to provide feedback on the NPC Plan or our Rules of Procedure as soon as possible.

Additional details on the feedback process are listed on our website and an NPC meeting to discuss feedback will be held at the Bronxville Public Library on February 28 at 7pm.
