Jan. 18, 2023: After winning leagues in early January, Bronxville track and field athletes competed in four relays and the pole vault at the Millrose Trials last week. The Broncos had outstanding success setting season’s best performances in every event.  The girls’ and boys’ 4x400m relay teams and pole-vaulter Max Dicker qualified for the historic 115th Millrose Games, which will be held at The Armory on February 11th.

Senior Max Dicker placed 1st in the pole vault at the Trials, setting a new personal best of 13-7 and breaking his own school record. Dicker was a competitive rower for three years before switching to pole vault last year. He had tired of the repetitive motion of rowing, and his father suggested he try pole vaulting.

“I picked it up pretty quickly,” said Dicker. “It is really, really fun and that is probably why I picked it up so fast. I love the adrenaline, and I love being flown through the air.”

Dicker trains under Coach Tim St. Lawrence at the Hudson Valley Flying Circus in Warwick. Coach St. Lawrence pole vaulted at Alabama and has been teaching for over 30 years.

“My coach is very good at starting with the basics and technique,” said Dicker. “He knows exactly where you need to hold onto the pole and where to run from.”

Dicker has only been pole vaulting for a year and a half, but he clearly has a knack for the sport. He is currently the No. 1 seed in both Section 1 and Westchester County and is the No. 2 seed in New York State.

The girls’ 4x400m team, Juliet Winiecki, Mai Ly Reinking, Kara Kochansky, and Danielle Dragoni, placed 3rd at the Millrose Trials with a season’s best time of 4:08.84, which qualified them for the Millrose Games and Nationals. This foursome previously hit the New York Standard and qualified for Nationals in the 4x200m with a time of 1:46.88 at the Coach Saint Invitational in December.

The boys’ 4x400m relay team of Jaime Valdes, David Patterson, Pierce Patterson, and Gavin Benton will also compete at the Millrose Games.  At the Millrose Trials, their 4x400m time of 3:30.08 hit both the State and National Standard.

The boys’ 4x800m relay team of Ian Gegenwarth, J. W. Henningson, Kieran McBride, and Ellis Goodson placed 8th at the Millrose Trials with a season’s best time of 8:21.01.

The girls’ 4x800m team of Hope Hershberg, Maddy Stupart, Charlotte Murray, and Maddy Williams placed 6th in 9:56.72, a National qualifying time.

The Westchester County Championships will take place on January 28th.

Go Broncos.
