Oct. 26, 2022: The Bronxville boys’ cross country team has been busy training and racing at Van Cortlandt Park, but they still found time to give back to the local community.
“Our team has been making care packages at our weekly team dinners and delivering them to the Community Fridge near Van Cortland Park,” said Coach Jim Agnello.
The Friendly Fridge, located right near Van Cortlandt Park at 5983 Broadway is the first community fridge in the Bronx. Since its inception in May 2020, the Fridge moves an average of five to seven thousand pounds of food per week directly into the hands of people in the community. The Fridge is happy to take any donations but said individually-wrapped sandwiches are the best and suggested peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fruit, granola bars, and crackers.
When the Broncos delivered 50 bags of goodies to the Friendly Fridge earlier in October, the two women who came up with the idea were at the Fridge handing out food and were incredibly grateful to the Bronxville team.

Parent Michele McBride organized the snack packs at one of the cross country dinners, and Lauren Toal and Karin Drakenburg Goodson helped with the delivery.
“The boys and I were very moved by the experience,” said Coach Agnello. “I am going to work with the organizers to consider having teams that visit Van Cortlandt Park regularly participate in food donations.”
