June 15, 2022: The Bronxville girls’ lacrosse team brought home a State Championship for the first time in Bronxville history. After many appearances in the Class D state semifinal or final game, the Broncos sealed the win on Saturday at SUNY Cortland with a 15-8 victory over Skaneateles.

The last time senior captains Caroline Ircha, Kiki Tormey, Bridget Finley and Megan and Molly Krestinski played in a State Championship game was when they were freshmen. The 2020 and 2021 New York State Championships were canceled due to COVID.

“I would definitely say that going into the final game, we were giving it everything we had because it was our last game,” said Tormey.  “Everybody on the team knew how important it was, especially for the seniors. That was a big motivating factor.”

The Broncos made it to the state final with an 11-6 win over Cold Spring Harbor. In that game, Bronxville was down by a goal twice in the first half but took a 6-4 lead and never looked back. Tormey was the high scorer with 5G, Catherine Berkery had 2G, 3A, Megan Krestinski had 2G, 2A, and Finley and Ircha each scored one. Olivia Shinsato had five saves.

The Bronxville lacrosse team won the State Championship despite having a change in the coaching staff. Bronxville’s athletic director, Joe Haven, took over as head coach in January.

“Going into the season, we did not know what to expect,” said Ircha.  We lost a big part of our team – our coaches. The new coaching staff stepped up and treated us like family. They were a vital part of our success.”

The Broncos have had just about a perfect season. They went into the State Championship undefeated against all New York teams. In yesterday’s USA Lacrosse Magazine, the Broncos were ranked 8th in the nation. Making it to the state final game was something everyone on the team worked toward since the beginning of the season.

“We started off strong against Skaneateles and were winning 3-0,” said Megan Krestinski.  “We went back and forth a little, but throughout the whole game we maintained a comfortable lead.”

Berkery scored first in the championship game and finished with two goals. Tormey and Molly Krestinski were high scorers with four apiece. Also scoring were Ircha (2G, 1A), Finley (2G), Megan Krestinski (1G, 1A), and Anna Becker (1A). Becker won the State Sportsmanship Award, and Ircha, Tormey, and Molly and Megan Krestinski were named to the All-Tournament team.

Four of the lacrosse captains, Tormey, the Krestinskis, and Finley, were members of the State Championship soccer team last fall, but the Bronxville girls’ lacrosse team had never won a state title.

“It is very crazy,” said Molly Krestinski.  “Our goal was to win as it has always been. We got that win in soccer and wanted the same again in lacrosse.”

This win is one for the history books. The team lost in the state final in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and finally clinched the state title.

“Winning the State Championship was such an amazing feeling because all the hard work we put in finally paid off,” said Finley.  “Throughout both games we worked really well as a team, and that helped us a lot.”

“I think compared to other teams at different schools or even at our school, much of our success is that the five captains have played so long together,” added Ircha.  “We were able to build off each other and bring different skills to the team. The lacrosse team has such good chemistry, and it contributed to our success on the field.”

Go Broncos.
