April 20, 2022: The Bronxville School may be small, but the lacrosse and baseball teams are making a big splash in Section 1. The Class D girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams have only lost to powerhouse Connecticut teams and are undefeated in Section 1, and the Class B baseball team has only one loss to the Rye Neck Panthers.

The 6-1 girls’ lacrosse team, No. 1 in Class D, is the top-ranked team in all of Section 1 according to LoHud’s Power Rankings. The 5-2 boys’ lacrosse team, also No. 1 in Class D, is ranked No. 4 in the Power Rankings, and the 8-1 baseball team is the No. 1 team in Section 1 Class B.  It has been a very impressive start for all three of these teams.

The girls’ lacrosse team has a very competitive schedule, and in April they had a win over John Jay Cross River, the No. 4 team in Section 1 and the top-ranked team in Class B.  In the 12-6 win over the Wolves, Bridget Finley scored 4 and Catherine Berkery and Megan Krestinski scored 3 apiece.

The Bronco girls took on a strong New Canaan team just before the spring break. In the home game at Chambers Field, the Broncos were down by 3 at the start of the game, but they came back and took a 7-5 lead at the end of the first half. The second half was a back-and-forth battle, but with just five minutes left, New Canaan pulled ahead by two. Bronxville was able to close the gap to one but fell short in the end losing to the Red Rams 12-11. Scoring in that game were Caroline Ircha (3), Berkery (2), Molly Krestinski (2), Megan Krestinski (1), Finley (1), Kiki Tormey (1) and Kathryn Giuriceo (1). Olivia Shinsato had 7 saves.

The boys’ lacrosse team opened the season with a double overtime 7-6 win over Iona Prep, a team ranked No. 5 in the Lohud Power Rankings, and have also had wins this season over Stepinac and Fordham Prep. The Bronco boys played two games over spring break, defeating Scarsdale at the beginning of the week, and suffering a close loss to New Canaan last Thursday.

In the 9-8 win over Scarsdale, Luke Stephens came up with the game tying and game winning goal. Also scoring were Tommy Garofalo (4G, 2A), Conor O’Neil (2G), Chris Patterson (1G) and Luke Sheehan (3A).  In the 9-8 loss to New Canaan last Thursday, the Broncos had scoring from Garofalo (3G), Patterson (2G, 1A), Sheehan (1G, 1A), O’Neil (1G), Wilder Burgin (1G), and Sean McGrath (2A). Luke Arrighi had 9 saves.

The baseball team has been busy and has already played nine games this spring. In a double header on Monday, Bronxville defeated Hastings 6-0 with junior Ethan Jacquette on the mound (6IP, #H, 2BB, 5 SO). Offensive highlights included second baseman Ted Heraty (1-3, RBI), shortstop Andy Holub (2-3, 2B), center fielder Peter Coquillette (1-2, RBI), third baseman Chris Lockwood (1-3, RBI) and left fielder Jack Gamgemi (1-3, 2 RBI).

In the second game on Saturday, the Broncos defeated Roosevelt 13-3 with offensive contributions from designated hitter Ethan Jacquette (2-4, 2B), Coquillette (3-4, 2B), and Holub (3-3, 2HR, 5RBI). Pitching for the Broncos were Heraty (2.2IP, 1H, 3ER, 5SO) and Jack Kennedy (2.1IP, OH, OR).

There will be some great games to watch in the next few days. The No. 1 Bronco baseball team will play No. 2 Albertus Magnus (6-2) on Friday at 4:30 at Scout Field, and the boys’ lacrosse team will face a strong Mamaroneck team (6-2) on Thursday at 5.  Mamaroneck, a Class A team, is ranked No. 2 in the Power Rankings.

In what could be the best game of the week, the girls’ lacrosse team will face Suffern under lights at Haindl Field at 6:15 on Friday. Bronxville and Suffern, both undefeated in Section 1, are ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively. Suffern will be looking to even the score after losing to the Broncos 10-8 last year.

Go Broncos.
