Dining Out and Buying Groceries on a Budget

By Karen Talbot

March 2, 2022: The price of food, gas, new and used vehicles, electricity, and housing has increased to the highest level since 1982. Consumer prices rose 7.5% this past year alone. We are all noticing this increase when buying groceries and going out to restaurants.

Here are some suggestions as to how to cope with this trend:

Groceries
You can save money by buying store brands on items like mayonnaise, ketchup, bread, butter, milk, and coffee. Trader Joe's in Scarsdale has lots of items under its brand name that are lower in price.

ShopRite in Yonkers also carries many items under its label, which sell for less money. Country Markets in Eastchester has raised its prices on many items, but it has the best deli department locally with many delicious store-made salads, meats, and fish.

For ice cream lovers, consider buying Stew Leonard's quarts of vanilla and chocolate ice cream for $4.99 or two for $9.00. This compares with Haagen-Dazs, which sells hand-packed ice cream for $14.99/quart. You can also take advantage of promotions and discounts that a store offers, usually weekly.

Dining Out
If you typically dine out twice a week, you can save by cutting back to once a week. However, you can still support our local restaurants by doing more take-out and enjoying your dinner at home with a glass of wine instead of paying $15.00 for one glass when out. It is also less expensive to go out to lunch than dinner.

When dining out on a budget, you might consider ordering two appetizers and splitting an entree. When out to dinner, the price of a steak is off the charts, so order a hamburger instead and enjoy your steak at home from Mini's Prime Meats & Specialties in Bronxville. I must emphasize that all wait staff should be tipped 20% even during these inflationary times.

I find that most restaurants serve generous portions of their food, so it is easy to eat half of your entree and take the other half home to enjoy the next day for lunch or dinner.
