Sept. 22, 2021: The Bronxville girls’ tennis team is off to a great start this season. They picked up their third win on Monday with a 7-0 victory over Dobbs Ferry. In the match against the Eagles, the Broncos jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Hannah Shammas, Lucy Clark and doubles pair Alexa Kocur and Lexi Hulbert won their matches, and another win by fourth doubles pair, Rachel Conniff and Isabel Haller, sealed the victory for Bronxville.

The tennis team opened the season with a tough 4-3 win over Eastchester, and followed with a 6-1 win over Blind Brook. In the Blind Brook match, excellent play from Hannah Shammas at first singles and Co-captains Fiona Vail and Lucy Clark at second and third singles, led the Broncos to victory.

The Broncos played a home match against Harrison last Friday at the Bronxville Field Club, but the rainy weather ended the games early. Rain suspended play with Bronxville up 3-2, but Harrison was leading in the remaining matches. Victoria McEnroe had a strong debut in the first singles position and adds to the competitiveness of the entire team.

This year’s team is on the young side having graduated five seniors, and there are only three seniors on this year’s team: Clark, Vail and Kocur.

“I think because we have a lot of new players, the dynamic is constantly changing,” said Clark.  “It is definitely different than last year, but we have made an effort to acclimate the new players.”

Tennis can seem like an individual sport at times so making sure the team members support one another is important for success.

“We almost serve as cheerleaders for each other, so it is important to have those connections,” said Clark.

The team will play league opponent Byram Hills on Thursday and returns home on Friday with a match against Mamaroneck.

“For league matches, Edgemont is a big opponent,” said Vail. “Last year we did very well in the league and came in second behind Edgemont.”

This season’s Bronxville-Edgemont match is scheduled for next Thursday, and the match will be played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing.

“It’s a tradition that Mr. Klurfeld implemented two years ago,” said Vail.  “The courts are public property so we get to play in a bigger stadium during Homecoming week. The last time we played there, Lucy [Clark] and I played doubles together.”

It was a winning week for many Bronco teams. Both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams and the girls’ cross country team fared well. The soccer teams played in the finals of the Broncofest where the girls defeated New Rochelle 5-0, and the boys earned a 2-0 win over Valhalla. The MVPs in the tournament were Bronxville’s Lily Jebejian and Ellis Goodson.

The boys’ soccer team is 6-0 on the season, and with a 5-0 win over Croton on Monday, the girls also remain undefeated. Both teams are ranked No. 1 in Section 1 Class B, and the girls’ team in ranked No. 7 in all of Section 1.

The girls’ cross country team competed in two big meets, the Somers Big Red Invitational on 9/11 and the Regis Invitational last Saturday. The Bronco girls won the Somers meet with five runners finishing in the top 13: Maddy Williams (4th), Lux Burgin (5th), Meghan Curran (7th), Katie O’Hare (10th), and Rory Denning (13th).  Ava Black came in first at the Regis Invitational in a time of 15.42.70, and Maddy Williams placed 4th (16.13.30).
