Broncos Honored at 2021 Spring Sports Awards: See List of Award Winners

By S.Q DeJoy and J. Murrer

June 30, 2021: The Bronxville athletes were happy to have a spring season this year after they missed all of the 2020 season. It might have started late and been somewhat shortened, but this spring’s athletic calendar was as close to normal as possible. Early in the season, fans were restricted to two per athlete, but as the pandemic restrictions loosened, the games were opened up to fans for the sectional finals.  Unfortunately, the competition stopped at sectionals as there were no regional or state championships.

Three Bronxville teams won their respective Sectional Championships: girls’ lacrosse, boys’ lacrosse and girls’ track and field. The girls’ lacrosse team finished the season defeating every top school in Section 1 and was the first undefeated team in Bronxville girls’ lacrosse history.  Many players on the team received prestigious honors: Caroline Ircha and Megan Krestinski were named U.S. Lacrosse All-American, and Kiki Tormey was named U.S. Lacrosse Academic All-American. Victoria Ruffo and Caroline McGrath received Golden Dozen honors, which recognizes twelve lacrosse players in Section 1 for their academic and athletic accomplishments. Coach Sharon Robinson was honored as Class D Coach of the Year.

The baseball team had one of its best seasons ever finishing with a record of 14-2. Senior Spencer Dessart earned Diamond 9 honors, which recognizes nine players in Section 1 for their athletic and academic accomplishments.

Both of the Bronxville lacrosse teams had a record number of players who were named All Section. Six athletes from the girls’ team and five from the boys’ team received this top honor.

Some spring teams are hard to follow because they do not compete on school grounds.  Bronxville has teamed up with Tuckahoe to form a blended softball team, and Bronxville’s Maggie O’Hara was named League 3A Pitcher of the Year and Player of the Year.  Softball Coach John D’Arco was honored as League 3A Coach of the Year.

The boys’ varsity golf team plays its home matches at Siwanoy Country Club, and brought home the League Championship with a perfect 6-0 record in league play and a 11-5 record overall. Seven golfers were named All-League and J.P. Swenson earned All-Section honors.

“A special ‘thank you’ is in order to Siwanoy for always opening their course to the Bronxville golf teams,” said Coach Chris Lockwood.  “We are spoiled to practice and play on one of the finest tracks and best maintained greens in the area.”

At the end of each year, two senior athletes are given special recognition for athletic skill, sportsmanship, and leadership. Alex Doukas was recognized with the Virginia Landis Award and Henry Donohue received the Lou Brinsmade Award.
