June 9, 2021: The Bronco fans had some tough choices to make on Monday. Three varsity teams, baseball, boys’ lacrosse and girls’ lacrosse, all had home field advantage in the quarterfinals of the sectional playoffs, and all the games were scheduled to start in the late afternoon. It was possible to keep an eye on both lacrosse games if you stood at the top of the bleachers at Chambers Field, and because baseball went late into the evening, devoted fans could catch the later innings of that game.
By the end of the evening, the No. 2-seeded boys’ lacrosse team and the No. 1- seeded girls’ lacrosse team each easily advanced to the semifinals as they overwhelmed their opponents, but the baseball game, which was tied at 2-2, was called because of darkness.
The Bronxville girls’ lacrosse team was undefeated on the season and easily defeated Westlake 19-6. Four Broncos scored hat tricks: Catherine Berkery (3G, 5A), Kiki Tormey (3-2), Caroline Ircha (3-2), Molly Krestinski (3-2), and Bridget Finley (3-0). Also scoring for the Broncos were Linnea Hentschel (2-0), Megan Krestinski (1-0), Dani Dragoni (1-0), Meg Outcalt (0-1), and Anna Becker (0-1). Olivia Shinsato had four saves and Gabbi Bici had three.
The girls will play at home on Thursday in the sectional semifinals.
The boys’ lacrosse team (10-6) defeated Croton Harmon 24-5, holding the Tigers scoreless in the first quarter. Top scorers included Tommy Garofalo (6G, 2A), Conor O'Neil (5-0) and Chris Patterson (3-3).
The boys will play in the semifinals on Wednesday against No. 3 Pleasantville, a well-known rival for the past decade. In the other semifinals bracket, No. 1 Irvington will play No. 5 Haldane.
The baseball game was one of the most exciting games of the day. The No. 1- seeded Broncos faced No. 8 Pleasantville in a pitcher’s duel that went into extra innings. Bronxville’s Spencer Dessart pitched nine innings but with the score tied at 2-2, the game was called because of darkness. The game was to be completed yesterday but unfortunately was rained out. Dessart is the top pitcher for the Broncos with a 5-1 record and a 0.97 ERA.
