Bronxville School Board of Education Holds Public Workshop on Preliminary 2021-22 Budget

By Staff

Mar. 17, 2021: The Bronxville School Board of Education held a public meeting on March 6, 2021, to discuss the preliminary 2021-22 Budget.

The first order of business was the approval of three grants from the Bronxville School Foundation totaling $73,000. The School and Board expressed appreciation for these grants, which were for media and technology, including a portable podcast studio, audio systems for the elementary school, and a cable channel for Bronxville School District.

The rest of the meeting was focused on the preliminary 2021-22 budget. Assistant Superintendent for Business, Dan Carlin, said that the School is toward the end of the 2021-22 budget process and expects to present a budget for approval at the March or April Board meeting. The goal is to adopt a budget that is within the 1.71% tax cap, which would require $700,000 in cuts to the preliminary budget.

The school is looking at options, including self-insuring the flood risk, which would eliminate $400,000 from the budget. The school now has flood mitigation pumps and a new drain and connection on Meadow Avenue, which means that it is better prepared to handle potential flooding issues. For a catastrophic flood situation, the School has reserves and the option for bonding. The School is also looking at other line items in the budget, including private school transportation costs, which the school is legally required to provide within a 15-mile radius. It is also looking at using reserves. Finally, the school is budgeting a $500k reduction in state aid, which is an unknown at this time.
