Feb. 3, 2021: There is some good news for Bronxville's basketball and ice hockey players. After waiting for the Governor, Section 1 and the Department of Health to approve high-risk high school sports, they will finally be able to start this week.
The Department of Health was the final step in the process, and they gave their verbal approval this week. Athletic Director Joe Haven notified parents about the decision on Monday night.
The DOH is meeting this morning to finalize the guidelines for winter high-risk sports. The information that is available so far is that the players will wear masks during practice and games, and no spectators will be allowed. There will be an exception, however, for Senior Night when two guests per athlete will be able to attend.
The game schedules are yet to be determined, but the season will run until March 14th with a maximum of twelve regular season games. There are no state playoffs, but there will be regional championships within Section 1.
Sports deemed low-risk by the state, winter track, skiing and squash, were allowed to start on January 4th and will also continue until March 14th. This could present a conflict for some athletes as there is a Fall 2 season, which commences on March 1st.
Bronxville football is scheduled to play during the Fall 2 season.
To allow athletes a more rapid transition between seasons, Section 1 will allow athletes to carry over three or four practices from their previous season's sport.
The recent snowstorm has been a mixed blessing for the Broncos. The ski team has welcomed the recent snow, but the track team, which competes outdoors this winter, will have to delay their home dual meet against Dobbs Ferry.
Go Broncos.
