Dean Apold Named Executive Nurse Fellow by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Sep. 25, 2013:  Dr. Susan Apold, dean of the Division of Health and Human Services at Concordia College, has been named one of just 20 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellows for 2013.

Dr. Apold joins a select group of nurse leaders from across the country chosen to participate in this world-class, three-year leadership development program designed to enhance nurse leaders' effectiveness in improving the United States health care system.

At Concordia, Dr. Apold is responsible for the social work, health studies, and nursing programs and is the founding dean of the nursing program. She is a two-time past president of both the American College of Nurse Practitioners and the Nurse Practitioner Association New York State and has been published in numerous prestigious journals, has received more than $3 million dollars in grant funding, and speaks nationally on issues of importance to nurse practitioners and their patients.

Begun by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 1998, the Executive Nurse Fellows program strengthens the leadership capacity of nurses who aspire to shape health care in their communities, states, and nationally. The program will provide Apold and her colleagues with coaching, education, and other support to strengthen their abilities to lead teams and organizations working to improve health and health care.

"I am honored and humbled by the foundation's selection and look forward to helping to inform the conversation to help shape the future of health care in our nation. I will enjoy working with a gifted and passionate group of colleagues in this endeavor," said Dr. Apold.

In 2008, Dr. Apold arrived at Concordia College to start its first nursing program. She has since created three nursing programs, which she leads with a dedication to excellence. In 2010, Concordia's Accelerated Nursing Program received national accreditation from the Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education, the first program in the nation to receive this honor within 18 months of the program's inception.

"Susan is a pioneer in the health care field and we are extremely proud of her for receiving this fellowship," said Concordia president Dr. Viji George. "We are blessed by her dedication to learning and transforming the lives of our students."
