Mar. 15, 2017: The Bronxville School's annual eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., included a "meet and greet" with the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.
U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), 32, described herself as a "new Republican" as she spoke with 150 Bronxville students on the steps of the Capitol Building last Thursday. Stefanik, who was first elected to Congress in a landslide victory in 2014, also took the time for a few questions from students.
"What's the best and worst part of your job?" asked Bronxville eighth-grader Liam Heraty. Stefanik, a member of the Armed Services Committee, explained that the best was knowing she can make a difference, while the worst was the overwhelming amount of information that crossed her desk.
The congresswoman ended her visit by taking a selfie with the students, encouraging them to follow her on Instagram.
Stefanik comes from the 21st Congressional District in upstate New York, which runs from Saratoga County to the Canadian border.
The meeting with Stefanik was a highlight of the students' jam-packed, three-day visit to the nation's capital.
The class also toured the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum and the Holocaust Museum, visited memorials, and attended a performance of the comedy Shear Madness at the Kennedy Center.
