Karen Talbot, Dining Out: Dubrovnik, New Croatian Restaurant Worth Returning To

Mar. 12, 2014:  Dubrovnik is the only Croatian restaurant in Westchester. Croatia is a former province of Yugoslavia known for its diverse cuisine, ranging from Mediterranean influences to grilled mainland dishes, and Dubrovnik is a very authentic restaurant in this regard.

It is attractively decorated with backdrop-lighted stone walls and dark wood accents and is adorned with lime green linens. Live music from a guitar player was a nice touch. The main dining room seats up to 40 people, adjacent to which was a lively bar area.

Our host, Misho, immediately took us to our table, where water and baguette bread slices were delivered to us along with a sardine spread and olive oil. The spread was all right but probably better liked by Croatians.

The appetizers were fresh and delicious--marinated artichokes with baby arugula, sweet peppers, roasted pine nuts in a citrus dressing, and grilled calamari served with a cabbage salad.

Dubrovnik specializes in fresh seafood, and a platter of fish selections is brought to your table by your waiter. There is also a large wood-burning oven where spit-roasted baby lamb or goat, called "Under the Bell," is cooked to order by owner/chef Zeljko (Jerry) Tomic. This main course has to be specially ordered one day in advance.

Main courses include a whole branzino grilled and served with Swiss chard and potatoes (deboned tableside by our waiter) and roasted chicken (Pečena Piletina sa Pastom) "in natural sauce" over homemade pasta. The pasta seemed out of place with the roasted chicken. Both of these dishes were first rate.

For dessert we ordered Croatian flan (Rožata), which was on the bland side. A glass of homemade grappa, on the house, was robust and flavorful.

Service was excellent, with just the right amount of time between appetizer and main courses. Our waiter was very attentive and kept coming over between courses to check on how we liked everything.

Prices are above average for this area, but "you get what you pay for." Downstairs the restaurant has a private dining room for 70 people, another smaller dining room, and an outdoor terrace.

We look forward to coming back in the summer.
