Bronxville High School Ranked #2 in Country among 'Open Enrollment' Public High Schools in Newsweek's Annual Ranking |

June 6, 2012: In its annual ranking of the top public high schools in the United States, Newsweek ranked Bronxville High School # 2 in the country among "open enrollment" public high schools. More than three-fourths (77%) of the 1000 schools ranked by Newsweek are classified "open enrollment" schools. Bronxville High School ranked #4 among all public schools in the Northeast, and # 40 among all public high schools in the United States. (See classifications later in the text).
According to Newsweek, the results of the rankings identify the best 1,000 public high schools in the nations--"the ones that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grad."
In commenting on the high ranking, Dr. James Hudson, chairman of the Bronxville Board of Education, said, "It is an honor for the Bronxville High School to be recognized for its academic excellence on a national level. Whereas we understand that these polls look at a narrow set of data to arrive at the rankings, it nevertheless highlights the hard work of the students, the faculty, and the administration. The community can take pride in this and in the quality of our students."
Bronxville's overall Newsweek Score was 1.32 (the range of scores of the top ten schools on the list is from 4.51 to 2.1). Bronxville students had an average combined SAT score of 1,919, an average AP score of 3.5, a 100% graduation rate, and an average of 1.1 AP tests offered per student.
To collect the data, Newsweek sent surveys to high school administrators throughout the country. The surveys requested data for the 2010-2011 academic year. More than 2,300 schools of the approximately 27,000 high schools in the United States were assessed to produce the final list of the top 1,000 schools.
The methodology used for ranking the schools includes six components weighted to achieve an overall "Newsweek Score." They are:
1. High school four-year, on-time graduation rate (25%)
2. Percent of 2011 graduates accepted to college (25%)
3. AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student (25%)
4. Average SAT and/or ACT score (10%)
5. Average AP/IB/AICE exam score (10%)
6. AP/IB/AICE courses offered per student (5%)
A noteworthy aspect of the rankings is the five sub-classifications of public schools used by Newsweek. These classifications are "charter," "magnet," "selective," "lottery admission," and "open enrollment." Some schools can be included in more than one classification. Again, Bronxville High School is classified on the list as an "open enrollment" school, as are nearly 77% of the other 1,000 top schools.
Many of the highest spots in the ranking went to selective public schools where students are admitted by academic achievement, admissions testing, or lottery. For example, of the top 10 schools in the Newsweek ranking, seven on the list were either charter or magnet schools.
Bronxville was the only public school in Westchester County ranked in the top 50 this year. Rye High School was ranked # 77. Notable absences from the list were Scarsdale High School and the Horace Greeley School in Chappaqua considered by many to be among the top public high schools in Westchester County and the country. Scarsdale High School students do not take AP courses, preventing the school from providing one of the components of the ranking and possibly accounting for its absence on the list. Horace Greeley did not submit a survey this year, according to the director of counseling.

Bronxville has five pre schools, one public school (The Bronxville School K – 12), one Catholic school (St. Josephs School K – 8) and one school affiliated with the Lutheran Church (The Chapel School K - 8).
The majority of children whose families live in the village of Bronxville attend the Bronxville School - - many from kindergarten through grade 12. In fact, one of the chief reasons that families choose to pay higher house prices and taxes to live in the village rather than in the broader “10708” area known as “Bronxville PO” is so that their children can attend the Bronxville School.
Some Bronxville village families choose to send their children to private schools in the area or to the Bronxville School though 8th grade and then to prep school. But, by and large, this group is still in the minority. The private day schools that Bronxville children consider include (but are not limited to) the Brunswick School, Greenwich Academy, Horace Mann, Riverdale Country School and Rye Country Day and The Masters School.
Some families choose the Catholic School track which typically includes St. Josephs (K – 8) and then onto other Catholic schools for high school. Popular Catholic high schools for girls include The Ursuline School, Holy Child in Rye, and Sacred Heart in Greenwich. Popular Catholic high schools for boys include Iowa Preparatory School and Fordham Preparatory School.
Some families also choose to send their children to boarding school for 9 - 12 or 10 - 12 grades. Popular schools include Exeter, Andover, Hotchkiss, St. Paul's, Taft and Choate.
Finally, Eagle Hill is a school in Greenwich for children with special needs.
